Introduction to Regimenting Postcolonial Multilingualism: Discourses of Speaker/Listener Ideological Positioning: Regimenting Postcolonial Multilingualism: Discourses of Speaker/Listener Ideological P…
This introduction explores ways of understanding multilingualism in relation to coloniality, with insights from ethnographic case studies in former colonies across several continents. Stereotype
Stereotypes commonly refer to fixed images that members of society share, especially the prejudiced beliefs that community members hold about certain types of people, or in the case of linguistic stereotypes, the way they speak. The sociolinguistic situation in Guadeloupe: Diglossia reconsidered
In the literature on Caribbean creoles two descriptive models have dominated to explain the structures of linguistic codes, the relationships between them, and their distribution: diglossia and the creole continuum. Most Anglophone linguists have argued that it is most accurate to describe the linguistic contexts of Martinique and Guadeloupe as stable diglossic situations in which two recognizable linguistic varieties with specific functional ass…
Words to Make you Laugh: Performing the Public in Guadeloupean Comedy Sketches
Guadeloupean comedy sketches in Kréyòl, live and on DVD, feature stock characters taken from the city streets, rum shops and small neighborhoods of the island. Through their depictions, actors in Kréyòl comedy sketches position different Guadeloupean "types" into an imagined social landscape that spans the island, the Caribbean and the mainland, including much of the social complexity of the island. This paper considers how creole comedy construc…

Koud Zyé: A glimpse into linguistic enregisterment on Kréyòl television in Guadeloupe1
This paper examines Koud Zyé, a Kréyòl-language segment that was incorporated into the local nightly news in Guadeloupe, an overseas department of France located in the Caribbean. I argue that the variety of Kréyòl chosen for use in Koud Zyé illustrates a moment in a process of enregisterment. I demonstrate that the variety of Kréyòl used in Koud Zyé consciously draws on elements of basilectal creole and presents many similarities to a written va…
