  • Girls’ Education, Social Constraints and State Policies in Northern Ghana, 1909–1960

Limpu I Digbun, Joseph Udimal Kachim et al.•ARTICLE•History of Education•2025

This article examines the complex socio-political factors that hindered the growth of girls’ education in northern Ghana during the colonial and early postcolonial periods. While previous research has focused on broader regional disparities between the North and the South, the gendered aspects of educational disparity within the North remain relatively unexplored. We demonstrate that colonial policies and local customs combined to create barriers…

  • Medical Services, Colonial State, and the Assemblies of God Mission among the Konkomba of Northern Ghana, 1931–1960s

    Joseph Udimal Kachim•ARTICLE•Ghana Studies•2024

This article argues that by the 1940s the interest of both the colonial state and the missions had converged to bring development to the colonised. Using archival data, missionary records and oral interviews…

Several causes have combined to bring about this unfortunate state of affairs which, in turn, has produced some adverse consequences. Essentially, the problem of the decline of interest in history has three parts to it: causes, conditions and co…

  • The paradox of democratisation in Africa

    Open Access•Joseph Udimal Kachim•ARTICLE•Southern Journal for Contemporary…•2020

This article explores the paradoxical impact of democratisation on belonging in northern Ghana. It argues that, while democratisation was expected to forge inclusion and create political space for marginalised ethnicities to acquire rights to chieftaincy and land, it rather reified and institutionalised their exclusion. The adoption of constitutional rule in Ghana in 1992 rapidly diminished state power and weakened its capacity to administer just…
