  • Covid-19

Open Access•Derek Avila, Huan Gao et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023•References: 8

This study focuses on how a global pandemic like COVID-19 affects violent crimes in the city of Stockton, California. The violent crimes that we will be examining are homicide, robbery, rape, simple assault, and aggravated assault. We obtained crime data from the LexisNexis Community Crime Map and obtained COVID-19 data from the San Joaquin County Health Department regarding the city of Stockton. We developed the results of this research by using…

  • Pain, Injury, Mortality

Open Access•Robert Werling, Amanda Figueiredo Pereira et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018•References: 1

Previous research has shown that the law enforcement occupation is a dangerous profession that has the highest violent victimization rate in the United States (Fridell, Faggiani, Taylor, Brito, & Kubu, 2009). This descriptive study aims to add to the growing body of literature on victimization of police officers by answering the central research question: What are the characteristics of victimization incidents of on-duty law enforcement officers?…

  • Citizen Opinion Survey

Open Access•Robert Werling, Sriram Chintakrindi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018•References: 6

Successful community policing is, in part, dependent on the community’s perception of their police officers. The police department of a mid-sized community in California’s Central Valley conducted a survey to gain some measure of the citizen’s perception of their police. The survey was conducted in conjunction with a nearby California State University. The results of the survey are being used to make revisions in the policies and procedures of th…

  • Cheating Behaviors among Undergraduate College Students

Tina L Freiburger, Danielle M Romain et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Criminal Justice…•2016

Using a factorial survey administered to college students at two Universities, this study examines students’ tendencies to engage in academic misconduct. The relation of strain, self-control, and deterrence theories to likelihood of cheating are further explored. The results suggest that increasing the severity of the punishment for cheating does not deter academic misconduct; however, several variables indicating an increased certainty of being …

  • Are Block Watch volunteers different than volunteers in community-oriented policing programs? Findings from a mature Cops setting

Blake Randol, Blake M Randol et al.•ARTICLE•Police Practice and Research•2014

A number of studies have examined the correlates of citizen volunteerism in crime prevention programs, but few studies have systematically compared volunteers in Block Watch and community-oriented policing (COP) programs. This study has two goals. First, this study evaluates the impact that a number of theoretically hypothesized factors have on citizen volunteerism in crime prevention programs, and second, assesses whether the determinants of cit…

  • Auburn System

    Open Access•Blake Randol•OTHER•The Encyclopedia of Criminology…•2013

The Auburn system, also commonly referred to as the “congregate system” or “silent system,” established with the opening of New York's Auburn State Prison in 1817, and was widely implemented by a number of other states throughout the 1820s, 1830s, and 1840s. The Auburn system represented a departure from the colonial prison system and sought to rehabilitate convicts through routines of “industry, obedience, and silence,” which served as guiding p…
