  • Death of the revolution, death of the event: Cinema and politics in the aftermath of the Egyptian spring

Walid El Khachab•ARTICLE•Journal of the African Literature…•2021•References: 1

Kant assumes an aesthetic dimension to the awe experienced by the self in presence of an overwhelming event. Awe is often dominated by the subject’s speechlessness. In the case of the Egyptian 2011 uprising and its interface with films, this article argues that the trauma caused by the revolutionary episode brought awe and silence as aesthetic principles. The failure of the revolution, due to violent repression, and its symbolic death equate the …

  • Sufis on Exile and Ghorba: Conceptualizing Displacement and Modern Subjectivity

Walid El Khachab•ARTICLE•Comparative Studies of South Asia…•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Sufis' theory of ghorba (estrangement or exile) underlies here a reflection on exile in contemporary Arab cultures. Hence Ibn al-Arabi's speculations on ghorba in Al-Futuhat al-Makkiyya shed a new light on Arjun Appadurai's notion of “ethnoscape.” The Sufi concept of ghorba paves the way for a modern Arab ethnoscape, where the Arab subject experiences transnational movement in the global space without associating this experience with the negative…
