  • Navigating political minefields

Open Access•Jordy Stefan, Alison Hirst et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational…•2024•References: 59

Purpose This paper aims to help workplace ethnographers navigate and reflect on primary access negotiations by scrutinising two of the concepts mentioned in the call for papers on this special issue: workplace relations and tensions. We introduce the frames of reference (FoRs) concept as used in the field of employment relations to the ethnographic community. We propose that the implicit frames of gatekeeper and researcher influence what they dee…

  • Holding your flag

Open Access•Nicolas Guéguen, Angélique Martin et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 28

Research has shown that exposure to the national flag alters people's behavior and political and intergroup judgments. In several field studies conducted in an area of France with a strong regional identity, we examined the effect of the presence of the regional flag versus the national flag versus no flag on behaviors. Various situations (e.g., money solicitation, implicit helping behavior, food tasting) were tested in Brittany, on the French we…

  • Carrying Flowers on a City Street Increases Others' Spontaneous Helping Behavior

Open Access•Nicolas Guéguen, Jordy Stefan et al.•ARTICLE•Ecopsychology•2015

Several studies have shown the psychological benefits of plants on people's health, emotions, and well-being. However, the effect of flowers on social relations, and particularly helping behavior, has never been tested. In three field studies, confederates held a bunch of flowers or a T-shirt, or they had nothing in their hands while walking in a shopping mall and accidentally dropping a card-holder on the floor (Study 1) or while waiting at a pe…

  • The Interviewer Wore a Flower in Her Hair

Open Access•Jordy Stefan, Céline Jacob et al.•ARTICLE•CAM•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 15

Studies have shown that restaurant waitresses with hair ornamentation receive higher tips than waitresses without ornaments. However, the effect of such ornamentation on other behaviors has never been explored. In this study, the effect of a female interviewer's hair ornamentation on compliance with a survey request was examined. Male and female passersby walking alone in the street were asked to participate in a short survey on their food consum…

  • Men's Judgment and Behavior Toward Women Wearing High Heels

Nicolas Guéguen, Jordy Stefan•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Behavior in the…•2015•References: 39

Research has consistently shown that the appearance of women's apparel influences men's behavior and judgment. However, the effect of women's shoe heels has received little interest. Female confederates wearing black shoes with 0-, 5-, or 9-cm heels walked on the street. In a first experiment, we examined the number of men in the street who smiled at the female confederate. More smiles were addressed to the confederate with high heels. In a secon…

  • Effect of Hair Ornamentation on Helping

    Open Access•Jordy Stefan, Nicolas Guéguen•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2014

Previous research has found that restaurant waitresses wearing flowers in their hair received higher tips. Here, the effect of hair ornamentation on responses to an explicit request for help was assessed. Two female confederates wearing a barrette with or without a flower asked 240 passersby (120 men, 120 women; apparently 30 to 40 years of age) in the street for bus fare change. The uccess rate was 76.7% when they wore the ornamentation and only…

  • Hitchhiking and the ‘Sunshine Driver’

    Open Access•Nicolas Guéguen, Jordy Stefan•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2013

Previous studies have shown that pleasant weather conditions can improve people's mood and facilitate positive social relationships. The current study tested the effect of sunshine on drivers' willingness to give hitchhikers a ride. Four confederates (2 men, 2 women; M age = 20 yr.) acted as hitchhikers on the roadside in France, on sunny and cloudy days. To minimize the influence of other important variables, hitchhiking was conducted only when …
