  • Drug Addiction

    Barry J Everitt, Trevor W Robbins•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Psychology•2016

A decade ago, we hypothesized that drug addiction can be viewed as a transition from voluntary, recreational drug use to compulsive drug-seeking habits, neurally underpinned by a transition from prefrontal cortical to striatal control over drug seeking and taking as well as a progression from the ventral to the dorsal striatum. Here, in the light of burgeoning, supportive evidence, we reconsider and elaborate this hypothesis, in particular the re…

  • Psychiatric case notes

Open Access•Edgar Jones, Shahina Rahman et al.•ARTICLE•History of Psychiatry•2012

Case notes of patients treated at the Maudsley Hospital during the interwar period provided data about diagnosis, symptoms and beliefs about mental illness. In the absence of effective treatments, patients were investigated in detail in the hope that connections between disease processes might be revealed. We analysed a randomly-selected sample of 700 patients taken equally from 1924, 1928, 1931 and 1935. Eight groups (three representing psychosi…

  • Cluster Analysis

    Open Access•Brian Everitt, Barry J Everitt et al.•BOOK•Cluster Analysis•2011

"This edition provides a thorough revision of the fourth edition which focuses on the practical aspects of cluster analysis and covers new methodology in terms of longitudinal data and provides examples from bioinformatics. Real life examples are used throughout to demonstrate the application of the theory, and figures are used extensively to illustrate graphical techniques. This book includes an appendix of getting started on cluster analysis us…

  • A Monte Carlo Study of the Recovery of Cluster Structure in Binary Data by Hierarchical Clustering Techniques

Stephen Hands, Brian Everitt et al.•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1987

A Monte Carlo study was made of the recovery of cluster structure in binary data by five hierarchical techniques, with a view to finding which data structure factors influenced recovery and to determining differences between clustering methods with respect to these factors. Recovery was found to increase as the number of groups decreased, as the number of variables increased, as the mixing proportions tended towards equality, and as the number of…

  • A Note on Parameter Estimation for Lazarsfeld's Latent Class Model using the EM Algorithm

    B S Everitt, Barry J Everitt•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1984

Latent class analysis is formulated as a problem of estimating parameters in a finite mixture distribution. The EM algorithm is used to find the maximum likelihood estimates, and the case of categorical variables with more than two categories is considered

  • Multivariate Analysis

    Open Access•B S Everitt, Barry J Everitt•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Psychiatry•1975

Multivariate analyses are an aid to, not a substitute for critical thinking in the area of data analysis. Meaningful results can only be produced by these methods if careful consideration is given to questions of sample size, variable type, variable distribution etc., and accusations of subjectivity in interpretation can only be overcome by replication. The computer revolution has produced many problems for statisticians, not least of which is th…
