  • The Picture of (Mental) Health: Images of Jewish ‘Unaccompanied Children’ in the Aftermath of the Second World War

    Open Access•Rebecca Clifford•ARTICLE•Journal of War and Culture Studies•2022•References: 7

This article uses photographs of a group of child Holocaust survivors – the so-called ‘Lingfield children’ from the Weir Courtney care home in Lingfield, Surrey – to explore how images of survivor children were deployed in the early postwar period. It argues that these images responded to broader anxieties about a generation of ‘war-damaged’ European children, and in their self-conscious portrayal of happy and settled survivor children, they inte…

  • E mma K uby . Political Survivors: The Resistance, the Cold War, and the Fight against Concentration Camps after 1945

    Open Access•Rebecca Clifford•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2021

Political Survivors explores the foundation, growth, and eventual splintering of a group that you have likely never heard of—the International Commission against the Concentration Camp Regime (Commission internationale contre le régime concentrationnaire, or CICRC), founded in 1950. Yet this book is far more than a straightforward intellectual history of an organization whose triumphs and failings have passed largely into the realm of the forgott…

    Open Access•Rebecca Clifford•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2019

Until relatively recently, the vast literature on the Holocaust contained very little on the youngest survivors of the genocide. Sandwiched between adult survivors and a ‘second generation’ of children born to survivors after the war, child survivors were relatively late to begin to give testimony, late to begin to call themselves survivors and late to receive historians’ attention. However, this has changed in recent years. A number of new edite…

Rebecca Clifford•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Jewish Studies•2018

  • R ebecca J inks . Representing Genocide: The Holocaust as Paradigm

    Open Access•Rebecca Clifford•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2018

Ever since its inception, the field of comparative genocide studies has had, at its core, the thorny problem of the “uniqueness” of the Holocaust, with a camp of scholars arguing that the Holocaust cannot and should not be compared to other genocides. A great deal of ink has been spilled over this issue, but few innovative solutions have been proposed. Rebecca Jinks, however, offers a possible route out of this impasse: in her excellent book Repr…

  • Emotions and gender in oral history: Narrating Italy's 1968

    Open Access•Rebecca Clifford•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2012

The year 1968 was and remains an emotion-laden topic in Italy, and yet few historians have used emotions to parse the history and memory of this period. This paper draws on a collection of interviews with former activists in the student movement and the New Left to explore the ways in which expressions of feeling in life-history narratives can flag up possible lines of difference in women's and men's stories. It draws on three emotive themes – re…

  • The Church in Crisis: Catholic Activism and ‘1968’

Rebecca Clifford, Nigel Townson•ARTICLE•Cultural and Social History•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This article explores radical Catholic activism in Italy, France and Spain and its place within the broader protests of the late 1960s and early 1970s. It addresses three key aspects of activism. First, how and why did individuals become involved in Catholic activism? Second, what did it signify to be a Catholic activist? And third, how did activists situate their militancy within the wider experience of ‘1968’? The convergences between this acti…
