  • The Other Side of Caesarism

    Open Access•Laura Cerasi•ARTICLE•Modern Intellectual History•2026

This contribution explores the cultural foundations of the concept of Caesarism, from the late positivist naturalization of national characters up to Fascism. The first section argues that the ill-defined concept of Caesarism circulating in Italian political discourse was based on the assumptions of late Tainian positivism, naturalistic and organicist, intertwined with a nationalist discourse. The second section traces how this imprint, combined …

  • They, the people. Italian Fascism and the ambivalences of corporative populism

    Open Access•Laura Cerasi•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2022•References: 1

This paper argues that, in terms of their view of the ‘people’, leaderistic plebiscitarism and corporative organicism are two sides of the same coin, which resulted in aspirational fascist totalitarian democracy. The binary – and intrinsically ambiguous – view of the ‘people’ is examined first in the passive and indeterminate qualities attributed to the Italian population, then in the institutional device designed to lead it. The resulting twofol…

  • From corporatism to the “foundation of labour”

    Open Access•Laura Cerasi•ARTICLE•Tempo•2019•References: 1

Until the mid-1930s, corporatism represented the main vehicle of self-representation that fascism gave to its own resolution of the crisis of the modern state; the investment in corporatism involved not only the attempt to build a new institutional architecture that regulated the relations between the State, the individual and society, but also the legal, economic and political debate. However, while the importance of corporatism decreased in the…

  • Corporatism and Fascism

Laura Cerasi, Stefano Petrungaro et al.•BOOK•ARCA (Università Ca' Foscari…•2017

This book is the first conceptual and comparative empirical work on the relation between corporatism and dictatorships, bringing both fields under a joint conceptual umbrella. It operationalizes the concepts of social and political corporatism, diffusion and critical junctures and their particular application to the study of Fascist-Era dictatorships. The book’s carefully constructed balance between theory and case studies offers an important con…

  • Empires ancient and modern

    Open Access•Laura Cerasi•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2014

This article examines the image of Empire developed in public discourse in Italy during the late Liberal period and Fascism by placing it in the context of representations of the British Empire, with which Italian imperial ambitions were compared. There is a continuity in seeing the British Empire as the expression of industrial and commercial modernity and its resultant strength, but what in the Liberal period was seen as an unparalleled superio…

  • Anglophilia in crisis

    Open Access•Laura Cerasi•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The image of England was very important to the political culture of Italian liberals during the Risorgimento and the post-unification period. Even if it was viewed as unreachable, it still constituted an example of progress that Italy could strive towards. This article reconstructs the stages of the process that saw a section of Italian political culture become alienated from this image, just at a time when a more complete form of industrial demo…
