Just an Etymological Note
It is a well-known fact that the stage of etymological research forms a quite slippery floor in particular when dealing with possible loans from tongues beyond the domain of one’s specialization. The present article is concerned with a case where a narrow, i.e. an internal caucasological view on the etymology of a word delivers already a quite plausible and convincing result, which, however, in a wider areal framing, offering a serious alternativ…

Studies on Iran and The Caucasus
This unique collection of essays by leading international scholars gives a profound introduction into the great diversity and richness of facets forming the study of one of earth’s most exciting areas, the Iranian and Caucasian lands. Each of the 37 contributions sheds light on a very special topic, the range of which comprises historical, cultural, ethnographical, religious, political and last but not least literary and linguistic issues, beginn…
Legende oder Sage? Der Fall Mäander
This paper focuses on two modern Turkish folktales being recounted in Afyonkarahisar (Western Anatolia). Both tales appear to have their roots in ancient Greek mythology, in which Meander is the main character. The story line is that Meander vows to the mother Goddess Cybele to sacrifice the first person coming to greet him, if she would grant him the victory in a decisive battle. The first person coming up to him after the battle turns out to be…

Georgian laqe, an 'addle egg' in Kartvelian Review of a Georgian Etymology
The paper deals with the revision and correction of the etymology of GEORGIAN laqe “rotten, addle egg”, which the late Prof. Georgij Klimov considered Kartvelian in his Etymological Dictionary. On the basis of an extensive areal study it can be concluded though that the term is not genuinely Kartvelian but must stem from a non-Kartvelian source, which is most likely Persian. The subsequent spread to other regional languages such as Turkish, Armen…
Auf den Spuren der Panta-Birne Ein "grenzüberschreitender" Fruchtname im östlichen Pontos
This contribution deals with the geographical distribution and the history of a wild pear’s regional name. This kind of pear, the so-called panta-pear, is typical for the Eastern Pontic area. The issues concerning the place of the fruit and its name in the local population's daily life and folklore, as well as in the toponymy of the Turkish-Georgian boarder zone are also elucidated

Birnennamen Aus Hemşin
The article discusses a number of dialectal names for pears, which I collected in the Hamshen area of the Eastern Pontic range in Turkey. This study is the first attempt to give the etymology of these terms and to also describe the kind of pears meant by the respective names. As it is to be expected for Hamshen, which in former times was almost exclusively inhabited by an Armenian population, a great many of the pear names have a direct Armenian …

The State of Armenian Paremiology and Its Future Tasks
The proverb is one of the most ancient and widespread forms of traditional oral literature. Along with other closely related or similar categories, the proverb belongs to the genre of the so-called Einfache Formen or Maa8Ie wKaHpm. Among others, the following categories can be distinguished, namely the aphorism, the maxim, winged words (Geflugelte Worte), as well as the peasant's saying, the slogan, the riddle and, last but not least, the proverb…
