  • Evenness peaks in fire-resilient vegetation preceded ecosystem shifts in East Africa

Open Access•Julie C Aleman, Yannick Garcin et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

Fire is often assumed to be a key driver in shaping tropical vegetation structure and composition in grass-dominated ecosystems, while forests experience infrequent but impactful fires that influence ecosystem resilience. Although short-term interactions between fire and vegetation are well-documented, long-term dynamics remain underexplored. This study examines fire regimes, vegetation dynamics, and its biodiversity over the past 17 000 years in…

  • Past fire dynamics in sub-Saharan Africa during the last 25,000 years

    Open Access•Laurent Brémond, Julie C Aleman et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2024

  • Sitwe 23, a Complex ESA/MSA Locality in the Northern Luangwa Valley, Zambia

    Open Access•Michael S Bisson, A Burke et al.•ARTICLE•African Archaeological Review•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 103

This paper describes the lithic aggregates from Sitwe 23 (SW23), a Stone Age locality in a previously unstudied region of the northern Luangwa Valley, Zambia. This area yielded two surface lithic scatters containing abundant artifacts derived from Pleistocene sediments on uplifted terrain and exposed by recent erosion on two adjacent terraces. The scatters are time-averaged palimpsests formed by deflation, but most of the lithics lack evidence of…

  • The Last Coring Platform You Will Ever Need

    Open Access•Olivier Blarquez, Julie C Aleman•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2020

Coring lakes and water bodies for paleoecological studies often involves using a coring platform to properly operate a sediment sampling device. In the past, coring platforms have been developed by specific paleoecology laboratories or by private companies. Those coring platforms are generally composed of two boats (inflatable boats, kayaks, etc.) connected together by a metallic and wood structure. While these coring platforms have proven their …

  • The reconstruction of burned area and fire severity using charcoal from boreal lake sediments

    Open Access•Andy Hennebelle, Julie C Aleman et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 16

Although lacustrine sedimentary charcoal has long been used to infer paleofires, their quantitative reconstructions require improvements of the calibration of their links with fire regimes (i.e. occurrence, area, and severity) and the taphonomic processes that affect charcoal particles between the production and the deposition in lake sediments. Charcoal particles >150 μm were monitored yearly from 2011 to 2016 using traps submerged in seven head…

  • Global Modern Charcoal Dataset (GMCD)

Open Access•Donna Hawthorne, Colin J Courtney Mustaphi et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2018

  • Estimating phytolith influx in lake sediments

    Open Access•Julie C Aleman, Audrey Saint-Jean et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2013

So far, no phytolith extraction protocols have been tested for accuracy and repeatability. Here we aim to display a phytolith extraction method combining the strengths of two widely used protocols, supplemented with silica microspheres as exogenous markers for quantifying phytolith concentrations. Phytolith concentrations were estimated for samples from two sedimentary sequences in which numerical age–depth models make it possible to calculate ph…

  • Tracking land-cover changes with sedimentary charcoal in the Afrotropics

    Open Access•Julie C Aleman, Olivier Blarquez et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Cited by: 14•References: 4

Fires have played an important role in creating and maintaining savannas over the centuries and are also one of the main natural disturbances in forests. The functional role of fires in savannas and forests can be investigated through examining sedimentary charcoal in order to reconstruct long-term fire history. However, the relationship between charcoal and vegetation structure in tropical grassy ecosystems remains to be elucidated. Here, we com…

  • The Other Country

    Julie C Aleman, J Aleman•ARTICLE•American Literary History•2006

The idea of the “Western Hemisphere” ... establishes an ambiguous position. America simultaneously constitutes difference and sameness. It is the other hemisphere, but it is Western. It is distinct from Europe (of course, it is not the Orient), but it is bound to Europe. It is different, however, from Asia and Africa, continents and cultures that do not form part of the Western hemisphere. But who defines such a hemisphere? In the introduction to…
