This article examines five wars that occurred on the Malay-Thai Peninsula in the period 1785–1838 and the deep impact they had upon women's lives during and after the conflicts. Constituting the majority of surviving refugees, women rebuilt their lives in the wake of war through business and trade in Malaya, as Islamic teachers in Mecca and Southeast Asia, and as servants and slaves in Bangkok. In each of these settings, women encountered new for…

  • Forging Islamic Power and Place

Francis R Bradley, David P Chandler et al.•BOOK•Forging Islamic Power and Place•2017

Following a defeat by Siam in 1786, the Patani community experienced a period of displacement that resulted in many resettling elsewhere in the Malay world and Mecca. This marked the denouement for the old order of orangkaya in the region and the rise of a new moral order. Led by Daud bin Abd Allah al-Fatani, the ulama employed a knowledge network to spread handwritten texts bearing new ideas on the place of Islam in the community. Throughout the…

In the years that followed, al-Fa?n? composed …

Through a study of over 1,300 previously unanalyzed Malay Islamic manuscripts, this article examines the role of the Patani community in the construction of transoceanic knowledge networks between Mecca and Southeast Asia in the nineteenth century. Set against the backdrop of the destruction of prevailing symbols of authority, as well as the displacement and scattering of the community after 1200/1786, the present study investigates the manner by…

    Francis R Bradley•ARTICLE•Indonesia and the Malay World•2013

This article examines Shaykh Da'ud al-Fatani's Munyat al-Musalli, a treatise on prayer, and how it provided a commentary upon shifting ideas of power, social practice, and legitimacy as building blocks in an emerging Islamic moral order. Promulgated by displaced Patani Malay refugees and pilgrims who studied with al-Fatani in Mecca and who later returned to Southeast Asia, this study examines transregional Malay world trajectories in the 19th cen…

  • Moral order in a time of damnation

    Open Access•Francis R Bradley•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast Asian Studies•2009•Cited by: 9•References: 6

Previous scholarship on the Hikayat Patani by Andries Teeuw and David Wyatt, and more recently by Davisakd Puaksom, has focused upon the political context of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries that surrounded its authors. In this article, I adopt a different approach by arguing that court intellectuals wrote the Hikayat Patani as a way to re-establish a moral order through writing during a era of political and social collapse. Se…
