Theorizing Authenticity
“Theorizing Authenticity” contributes to understanding the proliferation of authenticity in popular cultural and market arenas, a phenomenon reflected in the quantity and value of craft and heritage foods globally. The special section provides a place to explore how producers fashion authenticity through creative labor. The four articles in this section focus on the figure of the Italian artisanal producer1 and as such explore how individuals cre…
Authentic Possibilities
This article argues for the value of authenticity as an analytic. "Authentic possibilities" plays on a double meaning. In one sense, possibilities may be "authentic" in terms of what is true, real, original, grounded, or not fake. In another sense, authenticity as a concept may offer possibilities for analysts to notice how value is created. This article draws on long-term as well as disrupted ethnographic research in the Made in Italy arena acro…
Out of place: Everyday forms of marginalization, racism, and resistance among Chinese migrants in Italy
This paper develops theories of place in relation to migration to argue that the diasporic population of Chinese migrants in Prato, Italy, live not only ‘out of place’ due in no small part to marginalisation and racism, but also live ‘in place’ as they resist and make meaning from experiences and interactions with particular places. We argue that place-based dynamics occurring in urban spaces such as Prato can best be understood in the context of…
Encounter Ethnography and Making the ‘Made in Italy’ Brand: Chinese Migrant Experiences
Viral Encounters: Xenophobia, Solidarity, and Place-based Lessons from Chinese Migrants in Italy
Migrant and refugee populations have been identified as among the most vulnerable to COVID-19 due to what medical anthropologists have described as structural vulnerability. We argue significant differences exist between migrant groups and offer lessons for society at large. We develop the concept of viral encounters to frame an analysis of social narratives, representations, and practices involved in coping with threats of transmission and practic…

Scribble Scrabble: Migration, Young Parenting Latinas, and Digital Storytelling as Narrative Shock
The nexus of migration and family offers a conjuncture to enrich understanding of teen pregnancy and parenting. This article draws findings from a project centered on participant-produced new media to reveal how young mothers negotiate reproductive health disparities. We focus on young mothers' experiences of migration and movement, captured in local vernacular through participants' digital story depictions and follow-up interviews. We argue that…
“Doing Your Life”: Narrative Intervention with Young Mothers as Storytellers
The familiar story about young pregnant and parenting Latinas relies on commonsense logic about the timing of reproductive lives. We explore young mothers' own sense making, captured in local vernacular through participants' digital story depictions, our fieldnotes of digital storytelling workshop talk, and participants' follow-up interview reflections about enduring judgment and doing their lives. In this article, we introduce the Hear Our Stori…
Merchants in the city of art: Work, identity, and change in a Florentine neighborhood
A historic market emerges as the protagonist of struggles over identity, heritage, and belonging in an urban Italian neighbourhood. Globalization, migration, and urban politics have transformed ide
Circulating Children, Underwriting Capitalism: Chinese Global Households and Fast Fashion in Italy
This paper analyzes how kin-related values, norms, and practices become entangled in the hegemony of global supply chains. Our collaboration focuses on the Made in Italy fast fashion sector, where the ultimate flexible workers are Chinese migrants. We home in on a paradox: half of the births in this Italian textile city are to foreign women, yet once weaned many of these babies are then sent to China. This circulation of children gives rise to a …

Bodies as evidence: Mapping new terrain for teen pregnancy and parenting
Predominant approaches to teen pregnancy focus on decreasing numbers of teen mothers, babies born to them, and state dollars spent to support their families. This overshadows the structural violence interwoven into daily existence for these young parents. This paper argues for the increased use of participatory visual methods to compliment traditional research methods in shifting notions of what counts as evidence in response to teen pregnancy an…

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is part of Five-Colleges Inc, a consortium that includes the university and four liberal arts colleges. Consortium faculty from the School of Public Health and Health Sciences at the university and from the colleges are working to bridge liberal arts with public health graduate education. We outline four key themes guiding this effort and exemplary curricular tools for innovative community-based and multidi…

They Just Happened: The Curious Case of the Unplanned Baby, Italian Low Fertility, and the "End" of Rationality
Even in a country with super-low fertility rates, at least one-quarter of all babies are unplanned. The finding puzzles policymakers. This article uses Italy's "curious case" as a jumping-off point to expose assumptions about rationality. It offers a model to dismantle the "conceit" of rationality, drawing on Max Weber's classic critique and Emily Martin's contemporary appraisal. It asks: (1) How do assumptions about rationality related to sexual…

Unraveled: A Weaver's Tale of Life Gone Modern
Deftly bridging literary conventions, this compelling work exposes the cultural origins of a quiet revolution that occurred over the course of the twentieth century. Elizabeth Krause combines novelistic and ethnographic techniques to illuminate population dynamics that have raised alarm across Europe and the United States, and manifested, for example, in Italy's extremely low birthrate. But what actually motivates people to have fewer children? K…

In this article, we investigate the delicacy of adopting pronatalism as a public position in Italy. Mounting scientific and political knowledge about the demographic "problem" exposes a new hegemonic formation that low fertility is dangerous. Drawing on ethnographic contexts, political debates, media publications, and policy documents, we trace the "demographic emergency" and compare two policies: a monetary baby bonus and a law restricting assis…

"Encounters with the "peasant: Memory work, masculinity, and low fertility in Italy
The peasant in Italy has all but vanished as an exemplar of an economic way of life but as a social figure has relevance to trends such as the transformation to small families. Ethnographic "encounters" provide the basis for my explorations into the trauma and meaning of the historical experiences that find expression in Italian women's low fertility rates. Current family-making practices have resulted from historical adjustments deeply linked to…

Forward vs. Reverse Gear: Politics of Proliferation and Resistance in the Italian Fascist State
Gender is a useful category for historical analysis of the project of Italian fascist nation‐building, how it proceeded and how it became trapped in its own paradox. Fascist policies played upon normative and limited gender stereotypes of women as mothers and prolific bearers of children, yet in the process the dictatorship constructed women as political subjects for the first time in the history of the Italian nation. This paper focuses on the f…

The Bead of Raw Sweat in a Field of Dainty Perspirers: Nationalism, Whiteness, and the Olympic-Class Ordeal of Tonya Harding
This paper examines the interrelations of whiteness, gender, class and nationalism as represented in popular media discourses surrounding the coverage of the assault on Olympic ice skater Nancy Kerrigan and the investigation of her rival, Tonya Harding. As with other recent works that have refocused the issue of "race" on whiteness, this essay seeks to unveil the exclusionary social processes in which boundaries are set and marked within the" diff…

Memory and meaning: Genealogy of a fertile protest
This essay parses ethnographic and historical research on the political economy of generational and reproductive change. It aims to grasp experiences and transformations related to Italy's ‘lowest-low’ fertility, a situation that demographers and policymakers view as dangerous. This paper offers a counter-narrative as it asks: ‘What do subjugated memories and everyday practices reveal about Italy's demographic “decline”?’ Studies of Europe's demo…
