  • Pasado y futuro del neomedievalismo “fuera de lugar”

    Open Access•Nadia R Altschul•ARTICLE•Neomedieval•2024

  • The Decolonial Imperative

    Open Access•Nadia R Altschul•ARTICLE•Gragoatá•2022

The imperative to decolonize has now taken several disciplines by storm. For many, the foil of the call to decolonize are postcolonial approaches, presented as tainted by coloniality and as having a reduced to non-existent liberating potential. This essay highlights critiques of the Latin American decolonial project, including decoloniality as an academic power struggle leading to self-progression and enrichment of global north academics and inst…

  • Orientalism, Medievalism, Colonialism, and Militarized Mercantilism

Kathleen Davis, Nadia R Altschul•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Victorian…•2020

This chapter investigates the intersections of British medievalism and colonialism in two very different places in the world: early nineteenth-century Chile, as Britain exercised economic domination over parts of the former Spanish Empire (thus it will be termed neocolonial); and late eighteenth-century India, as British officials devised strategies for extracting revenue from Bengal. Despite their many differences, in both cases an area beyond E…

  • Writing Argentine Premodernity

    Nadia R Altschul•ARTICLE•Interventions•2014

Focusing on the writer–statesman Domingo F. Sarmiento (1811–88), this essay examines the functionality of medievalization in Argentina's internal colonialism. The extent to which allocation of medievality was employed by this foundational political figure, identifies this temporal trope as a core element in the civilizational mapping of post-independence Argentina and Spanish America. Sarmiento's settler postcolonial writing proposed, as part and…

Altschul, Managing Editor It is with a heavy heart and a measure of disbelief that I write an obituary for my extraordinary Ph.D. mentor, who died from a rare form of cancer on October 15 at too early an age. • The future of postcolonial approaches to medieval Iberian studies

    Nadia R Altschul•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval Iberian Studies•2009•Cited by: 5•References: 19

This article delineates some of the historical characteristics of medieval Iberia that make postcolonial studies especially appealing for a renovation of this multi‐disciplinary field, and it suggests specific openings for future research inflected by postcolonial studies. By discussing in particular the concepts of mimicry and transculturation, this piece exemplifies avenues for nuancing the notion of cultural contact, for rethinking the overuse…

  • Postcolonialism and the Study of the Middle Ages

    Open Access•Nadia R Altschul•ARTICLE•History Compass•2008•Cited by: 4•References: 40

This article focuses on the use of postcolonial criticism in the study of the European Middle Ages. It concentrates on two issues critiqued in particular by historians: anachronism and applicability. The article is thus structured around two questions: Why should medievalists explore contemporary postcolonial issues instead of strictly medieval ones? And why should the tools of postcolonial theory be considered applicable to medieval societies an…
