Where you live should not determine whether you live’. Global justice and the distribution of Covid-19 vaccines
In 2020, the world faced a new pandemic. The corona infection hit an unprepared world, and there were no medicines and no vaccines against it. Research to develop vaccines started immediately and in a remarkably short time several vaccines became available. However, despite initiatives for global equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines, vaccines have so far become accessible only to a minor part of the world population. In this article, I discuss t…
Cultural Pluralism and Epistemic Injustice
For liberalism, values such as respect, reciprocity, and tolerance should frame cultural encounters in multicultural societies. However, it is easy to disregard that power differences and political domination also influence the cultural sphere and the relations between cultural groups. In this essay, I focus on some challenges for cultural pluralism. In relation to Indian political theorist Rajeev Bhargava, I discuss the meaning of cultural domin…
Communication of Ethics – Across Cultural Boundaries
Is it possible to communicate ethics across cultural borders? Not according to representatives of “the incommensurability thesis”, who claim that values and norms are culturally bounded. This article argues against this thesis. A first problem is that cultures and traditions are seen as comprehensive, delimited, and exclusive. Normally, however, a culture develops from and is in dialogue with other cultures. Further, the inner diversity of cultur…
Rectification for Atrocities Under Colonialism
Wars and injustices can have wide-ranging reverberations. Colonialism ended – with a few exceptions – over fifty years ago, but there are still many traces left. In this essay I focus on two cases of atrocities under colonialism that have left scars in the present and my question is: how can a nation rectify for the long-term effects of an aggression? What is the appropriate ethical response? The two examples are the German genocide of the Herero…
The Meaning of Rectificatory Justice after Colonialism
In this chapter I discuss the meaning of rectificatory justice and how it applies to rectification for colonial harms. I will first clarify the conceptual question, that is, the question of which term is the most appropriate to use. Then I will sketch a theory of rectificatory justice. When the theory of rectification is applied to the history of colonialism a number of questions need to be answered. These keywords were added by machine and not b…
Five Cases of Colonialism
After the general overview of colonial history in Chapter 3, I will in this chapter introduce and discuss five examples of the practice of colonialism. The examples illustrate different aspects of this period of history: Uganda of a rather peaceful but nevertheless in the long run destructive colonial reign, Congo of a vicious quest for minerals and other raw materials which undermined the future of the subjected peoples, Namibia of a genocide th…
Global Rectificatory Justice
What are the implications of colonialism for a theory of global justice today? What does rectificatory justice mean in the light of colonialism? What does global rectificatory justice require in pract
In Defence of War
Just war theory has always been a matter of controversy in the Christian tradition. How could war possibly be just according to a belief based on the teaching of ‘the Prince of Peace’? In the history of Christianity, one finds on the one side radical Christians arguing for pacifism, and on the other Church Fathers, bishops and theologians who elaborate a doctrine of just war
Restoring the dignity of the victims’. Is global rectificatory justice feasible
The discussion of global justice has mainly focused on global distributive justice. This article argues for global rectificatory justice, mainly by former colonial states in favor of former colonized peoples. The argument depends on the following premises: (1) there is a moral obligation to rectify the consequences of wrongful acts; (2) colonialism was on the whole harmful for the colonies; (3) the present unjust global structure was constituted …
