The Beni Amer who came to the Maghreb during the Hilalian invasion are settled by Yarmoracen, south of Tlemcen. Throughout the Middle Ages, they acted as makhzen for the Abd el-Wadid. Accumulating honours and wealth, they were finally to gain control over the entire kingdom; at that time, the ethnic unity of the Confederation wa already compromised.
