Lithologic Discontinuities in Soils
Lithologic discontinuities are significant changes in particle size distribution or mineralogy that represent lithological differences within a soil column. Lithologic discontinuities in soils occur globally and are present when two or more different, vertically stacked, parent materials exist within a profile due to variations in past geologic or depositional processes. Recognition of these types of lithologic changes is important because pedoge…
Assessing lithologic discontinuities and parent material uniformity within the Texas sandy mantle and implications for archaeological burial and preservation potential in upland settings
Alfisols within the Texas Gulf Coast Plain commonly exhibit textural contrasts between sandy, artifact-bearing A–E horizons (i.e., sandy mantle), and artifact-sterile clay-rich Bt (argillic) horizons. This has invoked debate about parent material uniformity and pedogenic versus geomorphic sandy mantle origins, which has implications for the scientific value of buried archaeological sites. To improve our understanding of archaeological burial in u…
Archeological Testing at the Prehistoric Site of 41SM231 Smith County, Texas
In December 1998, TxDOT archeologists conducted an archeological survey for the proposed expansion of the walking and bicycle facility at Rose Rudman Park in Tyler, Texas. One previously unrecorded archeological site (41SM231) was recorded within the ca. 10-m wide trail corridor. In March 1999, TxDOT archeologists excavated two contiguous 1-x-1 -m test units at the site. Ninety-eight aboriginal ceramic sherds were recovered from test units and sh…
