  • The Transnational Artists Yun-Fei Ji, Hung Liu, and Zhang Hongtu

    Open Access•Joyce Brodsky•ARTICLE•Journal of Transnational American…•2016•References: 4

This essay examines the work of three artists, Yun-Fei Ji, Hung Liu, and Zhang Hongtu, all of whom emigrated from China to the US in the 1980s. Brodsky examines what effects the move to the US has had on their creative practices, as well as their connections to China—Ji has recently returned, Zhang has a studio there, and Liu’s painting content is rooted in Chinese subjects. Brodsky is primarily interested in the impacts of transnationalism, glob…

  • Reorientalism and globalisation

    Joyce Brodsky•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2015

In this article, I discuss some artists who have emigrated from India to the United States and the United Kingdom whose more recent work contains ‘Orientalising’ imagery influenced by the conjoined forces of the art market, collectors, biennales, globalisation, the Internet, the rapid development of India’s economy and its impact on the global art scene. It seems that fame and fortune for some Indian artists living in the West entails capitulatin…

  • Cézanne paints

    Joyce Brodsky•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2005

This paper restores bodily practice in the perception and construction of a painted artwork that engages the visible world. My choice of Cézanne in the light of this concern is three‐fold. Firstly, to counter his role as a painter on the road to abstraction in the story of Modern art, in order to reintroduce his continuities with traditional western genres. Secondly, through reading Maurice Merleau‐Ponty to further explore Cézanne's self‐portrait…

  • How to “see” with the whole body

    Joyce Brodsky•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2002

While their work is not explored, this article is indebted to Maurice Merleau-Ponty's and John Dewey's theories about perception and embodiment. In it, I propose that a multi-sensory “whole body” experience – Merleau-Ponty's “lived body” – is engaged in both the making and the viewing of artworks. In two sections, the first exploring practice and the second theory, the prevailing mode of interpreting art works exclusively as representations to be…
