The Geo-Ecological Turn in Sociology and its Implications for the Sociology of the Arts
Accelerating climate change has set in motion a broad change in beliefs about human life that is affecting the social sciences and humanities (SSH). A deeper understanding of the social causes and consequences of climate change is evolving in sociology, yet some of the discipline’s subfields have not responded to climate change. Is this because climate change is perceived to be irrelevant or are scholars suppressing new beliefs that could disrupt…
A Metahistorical Inquiry into Historiography of Nordic Popular Music
This chapter examines how the relation between national culture and emerging forms of transcultural diversity plays out in the historiography of Nordic popular music. The chapter offers a comparative analysis of how histories of popular music have been written in the Nordic countries. A particular focus in the comparison is on Finland and Sweden. The analysis rests on the principles of metahistory, referring to the ways in which historiography is…
Sámi Festivals and Indigenous Sovereignty
This chapter is a contribution to the literatures on Sámi cultural history, Nordic postcolonial studies, and music festivals. Drawing inspiration from social theory, the chapter explores how the proliferation of festivals has helped in the formation of local and transnational Sámi publics in the Nordic region. It argues that festivals help foster a sense of transnational Sámi community and work toward cultural self-determination at three levels: …
Musical Borealism
The chapter develops an original concept of musical borealism, drawing from literatures on European music and cultural history and from orientalism. The chapter looks beyond the simple concept of borealism as an exotic gaze by opening up horizons and offering a series of nuanced distinctions. Basic categories discussed are Nordic myth, Nordic folk and popular music, Nordic global music, Nordic ultra-national music, and non-Nordic Nordic manifesta…
The Oxford Handbook of Popular Music in the Nordic Countries
The Nordic countries, a group of countries spanning a large area of northern Europe and the North Atlantic, present unique natural and cultural environments in which popular music has come to play a significant role. Research on the region’s music has largely followed national narratives and ignored more complex geographies and transcultural issues. This first handbook of music in the Nordic countries explores the significance of popular music in…

Music in the Aftermath of the 2011 Utøya Massacre
This chapter is an analysis of the music performed at the memorial ceremony following the 2011 massacre where national extremist Anders Breivik killed 77 people, most of them young delegates at a summer camp of the Labour Party. Following an introductory discussion of theory of music, emotion, and nationhood, the chapter analysis takes the reader deep into a moment of emotional nationalism, just one month after the attack, providing a detailed de…

The present article is an explorative study of the developments in online video content in the music industry. The proliferation of video in the Web 2.0 environment around 2005, identified with YouTube, has been followed by a 'video turn' in the music industry around 2008. The article outlines three types of end-user experience that define video distribution in the music industry. This outline examines how they are shaped by the media technologie…
Introduction: Autonomy and Creative Labour
The economy of live music in the digital age
Popular music culture has changed significantly with the diffusion of networked digital media in the late 1990s. The present article theorizes the concept of live music in light of those changes and develops the idea of a new economy of live music. The perception of concerts as live music is central, so this is explored conceptually and historically before outlining the main elements of the new economy. Two immediate elements are the new economic…
Kreuzberg Activists: Musical Performance as Social Vehicle
This article argues that popular music is a key component of the social drama surrounding Nazism in contemporary Germany. Like other xenophobic and racist propagandists in Europe, neo‐Nazis have opened up toward a broad field of contemporary popular culture to gain power in mainstream society. The article examines the boundaries of popular music in reactions to the growing public presence of neo‐Nazism, focusing on the band ZSK and its connection…
