  • Creating new Constantines at the end of the sixth century

    Open Access•Santiago Castellano, Santiago Castellanos•ARTICLE•Historical Research•2012•References: 21

The emperor Constantine I (d. 337) was important not only during his reign, but also in the following centuries when he was taken as a political role model by several Roman emperors and barbarian kings. This article looks at two of those barbarian kings: Clovis, king of the Franks at the end of the fifth and the beginning of the sixth century, and Reccared, king of the Visigoths (d. 601). Both of these kings converted to Catholicism, and both wer…

Santiago Castellanos•CHAPTER•Scale and scale change in the…•2011

Kings, aristocrats, peasants, and the Church are among the shared features of most early medieval societies. However, these also varied dramatically in time and space. Can petty regional kings, for instance, be compared to those in charge of a whole empire? Scale is a crucial factor in modelling, explaining, and conceptualizing the past. Furthermore, many issues that historians and archaeologists treat independently can be theorized together as p…

  • The local articulation of central power in the north of the Iberian Peninsula (500-1000)

Open Access•Santiago Castellanos, Iñaki Martín Viso•ARTICLE•Early Medieval Europe•2005•Cited by: 21

Envisaging political power as dynamic allows the historian to deal with its structures with some sophistication. This paper approaches political power, not as a circumscribed block of bureaucratic elements, but as a complex phenomenon rooted in social reality. The authors explore the dialogue between local and central power, understanding ‘dialogue’ in its widest sense. Thus the relationships (both amicable and hostile) between local and central …

  • The political nature of taxation in Visigothic Spain

    Open Access•Santiago Castellanos•ARTICLE•Early Medieval Europe•2003•Cited by: 4•References: 1

This paper is an attempt to analyse taxation from a wide‐ranging social perspective. Earlier studies of this topic have focused on institutional aspects of taxation and produced statistical information of great value. The historian who is trying to understand the social structures of the past should, however, examine the significance, nature and function of taxation in its wider historical context. In this sense, and in the specific case of post‐…
