The time of gesture in cinema and its ethics
This essay explores the ethical and gesture in film, developing from Giorgio Agamben’s two ideas of gesture – of the movement that gesture constitutes, transforming the photographic into the cinematic; and what is pointed to as the feeling, or ethical stance that the gesture instantiates. In representation – whether literary or audio-visual, live or recorded, the time and timeliness of gesture as both the action of a moment, and the movement it c…
The difference in figuring women now
This article explores the feminism of contemporary women's film, video and installation art through an analysis of the documentary evidential and the imagined in works by Emma Hart, Hala Elkoussy and Sarah Turner. Strategems of Identification
Much of the work on identification in cinema has centered on mainstream film and, in particular, the function of the point-of-view shot structure. This paper will attempt to explore identification in a non-mainstream film, Dreyer's Gertrud, in two interrelated ways. On the one hand, it will examine the implications for film narration and spectatorship of the way in which Gertrud undermines the conventional structures of POV and shot organisation …
