The waning willpower
Research has shown that current mental fatigue and self-control capacity play a crucial role in the goal-directed regulation of emotion, motivation, and cognition. However, we still do not fully understand if the emergence of fatigue during the exercise of cognitive performance indicates a person's trait fatigue vulnerability. In this longitudinal study, we repeatedly measured the self-reported perceived control capacity of N = 2,094 trainees ove…
Investigating the impact of perceived mental fatigue on sustained attention performance
110 tenth graders, while they completed the d2-R test of sustained attention. By statistically controlling for social desirability, we examined relationships between perceived fatigue and the initial levels and slopes of three latent growth-curves capturing changes in the d2-R test's performance measures. Individuals with higher fatigue exhibited lower concentration performance, a weaker decline in processing speed, and a higher error rate over t…
Increased Risk Perception, Distress Intolerance and Health Anxiety in Stricter Lockdowns
Studies provide evidence that distress, (health) anxiety, and depressive symptoms were high during the first weeks of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, decreasing over time (possibly due to individuals' protective psychological factors). Relations between different lockdown restrictions, mental health issues, and protective factors need to be explored, since even small lockdown effects might increase the risk of future mental health issues. We merg…
The Routledge Companion to Urban Imaginaries
One of the most pressing challenges in the world today is access to clean water. This chapter explores the crises of contaminated water in Flint, water shutoffs in Detroit, and larger questions about the control of water by private corporations and the changing nature of urbanization. As neoliberal policies seek to privatize infrastructure and essential resources, the resulting crises illustrate the disastrous results of decisions driven by profi…

The oblique art of shoes
This article addresses popular culture and the humanities. It uses shoes as an object of analysis to interrogate the place and function of aesthetic pleasure in critical thinking and cultural practice in the age of globalization and the neoliberal university. Tracking contemporary articulations of the shoe as a popular cultural object, the discussion begins by recalibrating Judith Halberstam’s concept of the “queer art of failure” in terms of wha…
Die Effektivität transnationaler Maßnahmen gegen Menschenhandel in Europa
The Effectiveness of Transnational Measures against Human Trafficking. A Study of the Legal Actions against Modern Slavery in the European Union and the Council of Europe.
Slow Art in the Creative City
Global cities have been studied predominantly in terms of speed and movement, acceleration and circulation. This article examines the relationship between globalization and cities in terms that run counter to such emphases, focusing instead on slowness as a condition in contemporary urban life. Drawing on Jamie Peck’s critique of the creativity syndrome in urban policy, we analyze a series of street photography projects in the city of Amsterdam i…

Questioning urban modernity
This critical introduction to the special issue examines the place and significance of urban modernity as a concept in contemporary urban studies. It draws on postcolonial theory to demonstrate that the relation between the city and modernity developed within the western tradition of urban thinking has produced a geographically and historically uneven conceptualisation of urban modernity. This conceptualisation not only involves dynamics of other…
Amsterdam – New York
This article examines the impact of globalization on the urban imaginary in relation to two recent photography exhibitions – one held in Amsterdam and the other in New York City – which were designed as transatlantic mirror events to celebrate the 400-year anniversary of the Dutch ‘discovery’ of Manhattan. Registering a long history of transnational exchange between the two cities, the exhibitions invited a group of New York artists to photograph…
Globalization and Film Style
This special issue addresses the relationship between globalization and film, paying particular attention — in light of the journal’s core interests — to issues of style. The topic is important because, as the current global financial meltdown illustrates all too poignantly, we are deeply and inextricably invested in the realities (and illusions) of globalization. This investment is not just economic and political, it is social and cultural as we…
