  • Mourid Barghouti’s I Saw Ramallah: The Impossible Return of the Displaced Autobiographer

    Open Access•Asaad Al-Saleh, Asaad Alsaleh•ARTICLE•Humanities•2019

This article examines and problematizes the idea of return in the autobiography of Mourid Barghouti’s Ra’aytu Ram Allah (I Saw Ramallah). After thirty years of living in Egypt and Budapest, Barghouti returned to his hometown Ramallah in 1996 for a short visit that composes the core of his text. I investigate how Barghouti’s text unveils the Palestinian exile as a permanent state, but also as a challenged, resisted, or accepted the process of shif…

Arab citizens were called to join the revolt during the second half of 2011, while the revolutionary moment was still unfolding. Their stories offer unique access to the message that inspired citizens to act, their experiences during…

  • The ‘Statement of Purpose’ in Pre-Modern Arabic Books

Asaad Al-Saleh•ARTICLE•British Journal of Middle Eastern…•2015

By analysing the ‘statement of purpose’, as generally stated in the introduction of pre-modern Arabic books, this article applies modern theories of discourse analysis, autobiography and rhetoric to examine how authors used rhetorical devices to justify and value their works, and dedications to their patrons to gain influence and ‘market’. Examples will include those of well-known literary figures such as al-Jāi, Qudāma Ibn Ja‘far and Ibn Qutayba…
