Exploring Mentorship in Research and Extension Experiences for Undergraduates (Reeu) Programs Focused in Agri-food Systems
This research aimed to explore the importance of mentorship from the perspectives of mentees in a REEU program focused on circularity in agri-food systems. We used a case study design that included all students ( N = 9) who participated in this REEU during the Summer of 2024. A focus group was conducted during the final week of the program. We identified seven themes that contributed to how participants conceptualized the role of mentorship: (a) …
An Outcome Evaluation of the Faculty Instructional Development Program
Faculty instructional development programs aim to enhance faculty members’ instructional quality and promote student learning. Despite their promise, these programs do not always yield improved outcomes, making their evaluation crucial to understanding the effectiveness and influencing factors. Although many studies have investigated the effectiveness of faculty instructional development programs by measuring program participants’ changes in teac…
Real-World Experiences in Higher Education
Background: Systems thinking has been proposed as a means to address complex and wicked problems. Systems thinking involves moving beyond looking at an issue from a static perspective and seeing interrelationships between parts and wholes. Students will be better prepared to handle the complexity of the world if they develop a systems thinking paradigm. Yet, little research exists on how individuals develop a systems thinking paradigm. Purpose: T…
Effects of Experiential Learning on Students’ Transfer Skills
Experiential learning is used extensively in agriculturally related colleges and courses. There is a need to examine how to best structure meaningful learning experiences in order to best prepare the agriculture, food, and natural resources workforce. This study aimed to investigate how different modes of reflection and levels of transfer affect the development of students’ transfer skills over time in an undergraduate animal science course. A 2 …
A Phenomenological Study of Intensive Experiential Learning for University Faculty Professional Development
Background: College students need the ability to generalize and apply solutions through reflective practice. University faculty need professional development to use authentic cases to prepare students for the future. Purpose: This study was to explore the experiences of faculty through a year-long professional development program that included a field experience contextually focused on natural disasters. Methodology: This phenomenological study u…
Exploring Systems Thinking Typologies and Paradigms
Today’s agriculture, food, and natural resources (AFNR) sectors face many wicked problems like climate change. Addressing these complex problems will require people to have both social and technical knowledge. However, having knowledge is insufficient. Individuals must be able to think about things as they occur in complex systems. Systems thinking has been proposed as a way of tackling complex problems. The purpose of this study was to determine…

The Effects of Reflection and Transfer on Undergraduate Animal Science Students’ Knowledge
Background: Experiential learning is commonly used in postsecondary settings, especially in undergraduate, agricultural, and laboratory courses. However, a lack of attention has been paid by educators to critical components of experiential learning. Purpose: The effects of reflection mode (peer-verbal or written journal reflection) and transfer level (same, near, or far transfer) on students’ content knowledge were examined in a postsecondary, an…
Stakeholder perspectives on extreme hot and cold weather alerts in England and the proposed move towards an impact-based approach
Extreme weather alerting systems are one of the central tools utilised in adapting to changing weather patterns resulting from climate change. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the current alerting systems for hot and cold weather used in England to notify the health and social care sector of upcoming extreme weather events. We consider the views of stakeholders on the current system and explore their perspectives on the proposal to move …

Fashion, Sustainability, and the Anthropocene
The unbridled consumption of clothing threatens the environment. A discussion is developing around the adoption of new materials and economic models to reduce the impacts of clothing production and use. We discuss these emergent technologies in the wider historical setting of the Anthropocene. The history of human-environmental interactions is interwoven with the development of international garment economies. This article provides an account of …

The Jurassic Rocks of the Neighbourhood of Cambridge
Cambridgeshire is rich in Jurassic fossils, with ichthyosaurs having been found at Mepal and Barrington since 2000, and ammonites and belemnites occurring near Grafham Water. In the later nineteenth century, Thomas Roberts, an assistant to the Professor of Geology at Cambridge, was involved in close study of the Jurassic rocks of the district. Despite the complexity arising from troublesome local geologic discontinuities, Roberts correlated the p…
Shellfishing, Eider Ducks, and Nature Conservation on the Wash
This article examines the state of current approaches to the governance of common pool resources (CPRs), the impacts of the recent emergence of the partnership paradigm, and the consequences for the management of CPRs. These issues are explored through a case study of the Wash European Marine Site partnership, where a Public Inquiry recently upheld the refusal of the conservation agency to grant mussel cultivators permission to scare eider ducks …
