Qualitative Weighting of Environmental Impact in the Southern Levant between the 4th-c. BCE to 20th-c. CE through Culture-nature Duality
A qualitative method is presented to explain anthropogenic impact on the environment in the southern Levant regarding ancient land-use. Three major monocultural periods between the 4th-c. BCE and 20th-c. CE (Hellenistic, Byzantine, and Ottoman) are examined as a case study. Hellenistic olive oil presses, Byzantine winepresses, and Ottoman animal pens are extracted from archaeological survey data. The high concentration of “same type” agricultural…
Environmental variables and air quality
This study investigates urban environmental variables and air quality in the hot Mediterranean climate of Tel Aviv, Israel. It does so through in-situ monitoring of the variability at the microclimate level in three different urban settings: two adjoining office towers; a bridge over an intra-urban highway and railway; and a low-mid-height residential area. All three study areas are in close proximity to each other. The role of high-rises within …
Sustainability challenges for the social-environmental systems across the Asian Drylands Belt
This paper synthesizes the contemporary challenges for the sustainability of the social-environmental system (SES) across a geographically, environmentally, and geopolitically diverse region—the Asian Drylands Belt (ADB). This region includes 18 political entities, covering 10.3% of global land area and 30% of total global drylands. At the present time, the ADB is confronted with a unique set of environmental and socioeconomic changes including w…
A mono-window algorithm for retrieving land surface temperature from Landsat TM data and its application to the Israel-Egypt border region
Remote sensing of land surface temperature (LST) from the thermal band data of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) still remains unused in comparison with the extensive studies of its visible and near-infrared (NIR) bands for various applications. The brightness temperature can be computed from the digital number (DN) of TM6 data using the equation provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). However, a proper algorithm for retr…
