  • Shopping Under Suspicion in Canada

Open Access•L Gabbidon, Kareem L Jordan et al.•ARTICLE•Race and Justice•2025

This study was devoted to an examination of Canadian experiences being criminally profiled in retail stores. Using one's race or ethnicity as the primary method to identify potential shoplifters is referred to as consumer racial profiling (CRP). Relying on a national sample of Canadians, the research investigated four aspects of CRP. First, the research investigated the frequency of CRP experiences among the Canadian population. Second, the resea…

  • Pre-Arrest Perceptions of George Zimmerman’s Guilt in the Fatal Trayvon Martin Shooting

    Open Access•Maisha N Cooper, Alexander H Updegrove et al.•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2023

The racial gradient hypothesis of comparative conflict theory predicts Black people perceive the greatest social injustices, followed by Latinx and white people, respectively. This study used nationally representative data collected prior to George Zimmerman’s arrest to examine whether racial groups (Black, Latinx, white) differed in their perceptions that Zimmerman was guilty of a crime against Trayvon Martin. Logistic regression results reveale…

  • Interacting Race/Ethnicity and Legal Factors on Sentencing Decisions

    Kareem L Jordan, Rachel Bowman•ARTICLE•Corrections•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 16

The purpose of the current study was to assess how well the liberation hypothesis explained sentencing decisions in Pennsylvania. Using eight years of data from the Pennsylvania Commission on Sentencing (2009–2016), we tested for the liberation hypothesis through the interaction of race/ethnicity with legal factors (offense gravity score and prior record score). In using a hurdle count model, it combined a logistic regression to predict the incar…

  • The Effect of Race/Ethnicity on Sentencing

Kareem L Jordan, Tina L Freiburger•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Criminal…•2015

The purpose of this research was to examine the impact of race/ethnicity on criminal sentencing outcomes. The findings from prior studies tend to be mixed on this issue. Using 4 years of data from the State Court Processing Statistics (2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006) and propensity score matching, we examined the impact of race/ethnicity on sentencing outcomes among Blacks, Hispanics, and Whites. The findings suggest that racial/ethnic biases occur i…

  • A Multilevel Analysis of Race on the Decision to Petition a Case in the Juvenile Court

    Open Access•Tina L Freiburger, Kareem L Jordan•ARTICLE•Race and Justice•2011•Cited by: 5•References: 26

There is a large body of research examining the impact of race on juvenile court outcomes. Fewer studies have specifically examined the decision by prosecutors to formally petition a case to the juvenile court. A much smaller body of literature statistically controls for structural level variables (e.g., population density and racial composition), while examining the impact of race. Using the symbolic threat hypothesis, the current study examines…
