Research on a Buddha Mountain in Colonial-Period Korea: A Preliminary Discussion
Buddhist art became the focus of discussion when Japanese scholars began to construct Korean art history as an academic discipline. This paper presents a case study of how a particular Buddhist site, Mount Nam in Kyŏngju, was recognized, researched, and represented during the colonial period (1910–1945). By analyzing representative Japanese publications on the subject, I argue that there existed disconnection between the colonial government and t…
A cultural question for the division and unification of the Korean Peninsula
North Korea, often described as a “hermit kingdom,” has been widely demonized as irrational and barbaric. On the other hand, North Koreans are portrayed as passive victims subject to state violence. Within this simplistic dichotomy, it is hard to grasp the complex reality of North Korea where lives are intertwined with the regime, but at the same time daily life operates in different spaces with completely different meanings and resistance to the…

Mobile North Korean women and their places in the Sino-North Korea borderland
This article explores the situations of people living at the China-North Korea borderland. Contrary to the general understanding of North Korean migrants – as victims of the North Korean brutal state and economic impoverishment – many North Koreans at the Sino-North Korea borderland cross the border (a border river) as a matter of everyday practice. This article thus contests the general restrictive stereotypes that frame North Korean mobility, a…

Frequency of SSB consumption was positively associated with tooth loss among young adults even when the average SSB intake was less than one time per day. This study suggests that efforts to reduce SSB intake among young adults may help to decrease the risk of tooth loss
I am well-cooked food”: Survival strategies of North Korean female border-crossers and possibilities for empowerment
More than the half the people who cross the North Korea–China border are women, with most leaving home to seek food, economic benefits and a more comfortable life. From the human rights perspective, it is clear that the dangerous nature of their journeys across the border and their illegal status in China place them in a very vulnerable position with regard to human trafficking and many types of sexual and physical violence. However, some women v…
Tracing Japanese filmworkers' journeys to “the global”
Yoshiharu Tezuka's Japanese Cinema Goes Global: Filmworker's Journey attempts to analyze the history of Japanese cinema in relation to its generalized other, “Hollywood”, with two theoretical frameworks: that is, globalization, especially economic globalization, and cosmopolitanism. Bringing his personal experience of being a Japanese filmworker as well as rich research data, the author persuasively argues that Japanese filmworkers as cosmopolita…
