  • Gucci cabbages and Dior eggplants

Open Access•Lena Scheen, Jeroen De Kloet•ARTICLE•Focaal•2026

The lockdown in Shanghai (Spring 2022) sparked a flood of funny memes, songs, artworks, and short videos shared on WeChat platforms. Based on an analysis of over five hundred posts, we analyze three moments: First, the humor at the start of the lockdown, characterized by parody and irony and clearly infused with a strong sense of Shanghaineseness. Second, during the lockdown, more critical humorous voices became prominent. Third and finally, in t…

  • Storytelling as urban resistance in Shanghai

    Lena Scheen•ARTICLE•Asian Anthropology•2020

This study is based on field research in Peace Neighborhood in Shanghai (2016–2018), where I followed a small group of "nail householders" (dingzihu 钉子户) protesting the upcoming demolition of their neighborhood, and recorded their stories. Whereas previous studies on nail householders have focused on the residents' strategies claiming their rights, I aim to add a subjective dimension to better understand the individual experience of forced evicti…

  • Shanghai Literary Imaginings

Lena Scheen, Kircz Weel•BOOK•Shanghai Literary Imaginings•2015

This book draws on a wide range of methods—including approaches from literary studies, cultural studies, and urban sociology—to analyze the transformation of Shanghai through rapid growth and widespread urban renewal. Lena Scheen explores the literary imaginings of the city, its past, present, and future, in order to understand the effects of that urban transformation on both the psychological state of Shanghai’s citizens and their perception of …

  • Spectacle and the City

Open Access•Jeroen De Kloet, Lena Scheen•EDITOR•BOOK•Spectacle and the City•2013

As China becomes increasingly modern and urban, artists have responded by imagining the Chinese city at the intersections of the social, material, and political realities of modern life. This volume explores how the city-as-spectacle has been visualized and contested in art and popular culture. Featuring essays by an interdisciplinary team of scholars, 'Spectacle and the City'; is as broad as the terrain it covers: with essays by an interdiscipli…

  • Pudong

    Open Access•Jeroen De Kloet, Lena Scheen•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural…•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 12

Shanghai’s Pudong financial district is known for its spectacular skyline, which Michelle Huang has referred to as ‘a copy of a global city’ – a reading that this article pushes further. What does this ‘copy of a global city’ tell us about the intricate relationships between globalisation, capitalism and urbanity? Whereas Koolhaas proposed the notion of the ‘generic city’ to grasp the future Asian city, this article argues that his reading reifie…
