The Importance of Recruitment of Low-Income Pregnant Persons in Interdisciplinary Research to Understand the Impact of Social and Environmental Determinants
Background: Prior research indicates that enrolling underrepresented populations in clinical research is challenging. Although research has identified some barriers to participation and strategies to overcome them, studies have made little progress in being inclusive and representative. There remains a great need for including racial/ethnic minorities, low-income families, and pregnant women in research. The purpose of this article is to describe…
The Role of Testing and Vaccination in Mediating Social Vulnerability and Covid-19 Prevalence in Southern Nevada
The COVID-19 pandemic is a catastrophic event highlighting numerous health disparities. The social vulnerability index (SVI) has been widely utilized in COVID-19 research to assess vulnerable communities and to examine how social determinants influence various COVID-19 outcomes. This population-based study aims to determine whether COVID-19 testing and vaccination rates mediate the relationship between the SVI and COVID-19 prevalence. Mediation a…
Behavioral and Sociodemographic Predictors of Diabetes Among Non-Hispanic Multiracial Adults in the United States
In non-Hispanic multiracial adults, factors such as adiposity and older age increased the risk of diabetes, while physical activity and alcohol consumption offered protective benefits. These findings indicate that current diabetes prevention strategies are applicable to this subgroup, and public health initiatives should prioritize their inclusion in outreach, screening, and intervention efforts

Environmental hazards and likelihood of mitigation in renter-occupied housing units in Clark County, Nevada
Limited research exists on the effectiveness of the NV state statutes on ensuring habitability and access to essential services, and the characteristics of environmental hazards found in Clark County, NV renter-occupied units (ROUs). We examined data from the Clark County Landlord and Tenant Hotline Study to determine which ROUs are most at-risk for hazards and what factors are associated with remediation, examining age of unit, hazard type, and …
Food insecurity and risky sexual behaviors among college students during the Covid-19 pandemic
The current study provides valuable information on food insecurity and RSB among college students during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Larger and longitudinal studies are needed to assess the trajectory of the association between food insecurity and fellatio with no condom use and other RSB among college students
Senior food insecurity in the USA
Objective: Understanding the factors associated with senior food insecurity is key to understanding senior-specific needs to develop targeted interventions and ultimately lower the prevalence and the incidence of food insecurity. We aimed to systematically review published literature and summarise the associated factors of food insecurity in older adults in the USA. Design: We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of science, EconLit and JSTOR databases f…
A Mixed-Methods Assessment of Residential Housing Tenants’ Concerns about Property Habitability and the Implementation of Habitability Laws in Southern Nevada
Housing is a key health determinant. Habitability laws set minimum standards for adequate housing. However, accessing them to ensure adequate housing may be a challenge for many tenants. This paper explores the need for rental housing policy that would better support adequate and safe housing, particularly for low-income renters. A mixed-methods approach assessed residential tenant habitability concerns in Clark County, Nevada, through calls rela…

Design: The current study linked school-level absenteeism and household food insecurity rates using geographic i…
An Evaluation of Food Insecurity and Its Correlates in a Filipino American Study Sample Residing in Clark County, Nevada
Purpose: Filipino Americans comprise over half of the Asian American population in Clark County, Nevada. This study aimed to assess the status and correlates of food in…
A Qualitative Study on Parental and Community Stakeholder Views of the Link between Full-Day Kindergarten and Health in Southern Nevada
Studies show that children who attend full-day kindergarten (FDK) experience both academic and developmental benefits compared to children who attend half-day programs. Sectors outside of health, such as education, can have important intended and unintended impacts on health. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand perceptions of parental and other stakeholders in Southern Nevada (USA) about the education−health link, and to under…
The Environmental Impact and Formation of Meals from the Pilot Year of a Las Vegas Convention Food Rescue Program
Annually, millions of tonnes of leftover edible foods are sent to landfill. Not only does this harm the environment by increasing the release of greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change, but it poses a question of ethics given that nearly 16 million households are food insecure in the US, and hundreds of millions of people around the globe. The purpose of this study was to document the amount of food diverted from landfill in the pilot…
A State of Uncertainty
This policy brief examines preventive services state legislation trends in the United States during uncertainty regarding the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which requires certain coverage of 4 evidence-based preventive services categories without additional patient costs under §2713. We used a legal mapping approach to search for and analyze state legislation related to preventive services proposed or enacted over a 25-month period of ACA uncertaint…
Healthy Food Options at Dollar Discount Stores Are Equivalent in Quality and Lower in Price Compared to Grocery Stores
Food deserts indicate limited access to and affordability of healthy foods. One potential mediator is the availability of healthy food in non-traditional outlets such as dollar-discount stores, stores selling produce at the fixed $1 price. The purpose of this study was to compare availability, quality, price differences in 'healthier' versus 'regular' food choices, price per each food item, and summary score in dollar-discount stores to grocery s…
Community Design Impacts on Health Habits in Low-income Southern Nevadans
