Siraiki Trīmtī (Feminism)
As a literary scholar, building on my initial observations about the lack of agency that Siraiki women writers have received within the Siraiki and Pakistani context, this article aims to articulate Siraiki Trīmtī (Feminism) through my autoethnographic experiences. The objective is to discuss how my local/regional or Siraiki sociopolitical context and role as a political activist has impacted or matured my feminist perspectives. This local femini…
Authoring a Muslim Feminist “Self” Through Travel Writing
This article aims to analyze nineteenth and twentieth-century travel writing by a Muslim woman writer, Nur Begum, who embarked on a 3-month journey to perform Hajj (pilgrimage). We aim to unravel her deliberate choice of poetic form as travel writing, which we argue consciously manifests her resistance against the prevailing patriarchal norms set by the Muslim culture. The study draws on Bakhtin’s dialogic framework of the human “self” as an agen…
Cultural Representations as Subversive Discourses in Pakistan
This article explores the cultural discourse of Siraiki as a regional language that represents ethnicities, cultures and identities in Pakistan. The Siraiki language is spoken in the major districts of the Punjab province (politically tagged as ‘Southern Punjab’). In the highly charged political context of the Siraiki community’s political struggle for a Siraikistan province within the federation of Pakistan, the literary festivals (such as Mehra…
Siraiki Language Speakers in London
This paper discusses the settlement of the first and second generations of Siraiki speakers in London and their attachment to their mother tongue as a key identity marker. Their convoluted Siraiki-Pakistani-British identities have been explored through their attempts to transfer Siraiki to their second generation through communication, literature and cultural practices. The ethnographic data collected from London is discussed in the light of the …
Trimti
This paper applies textual analysis and an ethnographic approach to explore the role of women within the Siraiki cultural and literary domain. The debate about Siraiki as an ethno linguistic identity is a postcolonial development in Pakistan. Siraiki language speakers identify themselves being distinct from any other ethnic group in Pakistan. Based on this claim they resist the hegemonic control of Punjabi-Mohajir over their resources, area and d…

Tracing Sufi influence in the works of contemporary Siraiki Poet, Riffat Abbas
This paper examines the work of nineteenth century Siraiki mystic poet Khawaja Ghulam Farid and traces his influence on a contemporary poet Riffat Abbas. I aim to shed light on the changing disposition of Siraiki poetry through content and textual analysis of selected Kafis written by both these poets. Kafi writing is observed as a discourse moulded to convey some political implications as it can be associated with the ‘risky political times’ as …
