The Impact of Akhlaq-i Nasiri on the Forms and Spaces of Akbar’s Fatehpur Sikri
In this article, I examine the structures and spatial dynamics of Fatehpur Sikri to show how the overall design of the Mughal capital city was informed by Islamic philosophy and ethical texts known as akhlaq. Both discourses used the concept of the city to theorize how the ideals of justice could be materialized. After creating an interpretative framework based on these texts, I focus on four spaces of interaction at Fatehpur Sikri, the Jami Masj…
The parallax view
This paper studies six South Asian American artists whose creative projects reveal the diasporic experience as a persistent negotiation of living in multiple historical and geographical locations. To fully understand the proposals made by their work I introduce the parallax view that enables us to see from two or more vantage points at once. This framework is well suited for art that seeks to expose the private traumas and contradictions that aff…
The Wisdom to Wonder

Guiding Indian Islamic rulers toward this disposition were Neoplatonic philosophies and texts organized around the structuring principle of wonders or ‘aja’ib. I argue that the discourses on the ‘aja’ib had a significant twofold imp…

Colours in Motion
This article investigates the reception and representation of the Colour Field artist, Natvar Bhavsar (b 1934), and his paintings in art historical and critical discourses. It argues that American art discourse continues to misinterpret the proposals made by Asian American artists like Bhavsar because it maintains categories and narratives of Abstract Expressionism devised by nationalist critics from the 1950s and 1960s. An alternative analytic f…
Monumental Matters
1990, V. P. Singh, India's eighth prime minister, posed a resounding question to an audience of MPs: "What kind of India do you want?"With this question, Singh signaled the irony of a secular nation-state indulging the Hindu nationalist demand to demolish the Babri Masjid, a small sixteenth-century mosque. The ultimate aim of this endeavor, known as the kar seva (service), was to build a Hindu temple in place of the mosque to simultaneously mark t…
