  • Ethno-Racial Differences in Age and Symptom Severity Among Pre-Menopausal Women Commencing Treatment for Benign Gynecological Conditions with a Levonorgestrel-Releasing Intrauterine Device

    Open Access•Matthew J Green, Kemi M Doll et al.•ARTICLE•Health Equity•2025

Introduction: Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine devices (LNG-IUDs) can be effective treatments for benign gynecological conditions, but there may be ethno-racial differences in how patients receive treatment. Methods: Data were from a health care system in the U.S. South (April 2014-September 2019). We identified 783 female patients aged 18-44 years with an LNG-IUD for a benign gynecological condition (455 White, 208 Black, and 120 Hispanic p…

  • Cancer Risk Behaviors, Cancer Beliefs, and Health Information Seeking Among Under-Represented Populations in San Francisco

    Open Access•Eduardo J Santiago-Rodríguez, Natalie A Rivadeneira et al.•ARTICLE•Health Equity•2022

Purpose: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals in the United States are at increased risk of cancer compared to the non-SGM population. Understanding how SGM persons perceive cancer risk and their practices and preferences for accessing health information is key for improving the preventive and health care services they receive. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed data from the San Francisco Health Information National Tren…

  • Socioeconomic status and colorectal cancer screening behaviors in a vulnerable multiethnic population

    Eduardo J Santiago-Rodríguez, Natalie A Rivadeneira et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2020

Participants with lower SES characteristics were less likely to adhere to CRC screening guidelines and being retired was a predictor of compliance. There was evidence of heterogeneity in associations between SES and CRC screening by race/ethnicity. Life circumstances of retired people could provide insights for designing interventions aimed to improve CRC screening uptake in these priority groups. Future efforts should consider mechanisms underly…

  • Health Information–seeking Behaviors and Preferences of a Diverse, Multilingual Urban Cohort

    Elaine C Khoong, Gem M Le et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2019•References: 21

INTRODUCTION: In order to address health disparities, it is important to understand how vulnerable individuals seek information. This study used an adapted version of the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) administered in English, Spanish, and Chinese to describe the behaviors and preferences of a diverse group of vulnerable urban residents. METHODS: We administered a modified HINTS survey in English, Spanish, and Chinese and used …

  • “You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby”

    Natalie A Rivadeneira, A Noymer•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•2017

We analyze lung cancer mortality by age and sex in the United States, 1959-2013. It is already known that male lung cancer death rates exceed those of women and that tobacco use is the leading reason for the sex difference. We elaborate on this knowledge by showing that unlike most causes of death, lung cancer mortality patterns by age are a very good fit to a quadratic-Gompertz model, i.e., log mortality rates are quadratic by age, with the mode…
