  • Barnard’s Mysterious Star Near Venus

William Sheehan, Tim B Hunter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2025

Edward Emerson Barnard is regarded as one of the greatest astronomical observers of all time, who discovered numerous comets, the fifth satellite of Jupiter, and pioneered the wide-angle photography of the Milky Way. Given his well-earned reputation as the most judicious and reliable observer of his time, an observation of a seventh-magnitude star near Venus with the 36-inch refractor of Lick Observatory on 13 August 1892, which has never been ex…

  • A Case Study of the Picture Rocks Sun Dagger, Plus a Review of the Intentionality of Sun Daggers

Bradley E Schaefer, James Stamm•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2020

The Picture Rocks Sun Dagger is a spiral petroglyph on a hillside northwest of Tucson that shows sun dagger events at both the summer solstice and the equinoxes. On each of these dates, a wedge-shaped sunbeam with opening angles 20°- 30° touches the center of the spiral, with both of these being confidently intentionally constructed by peoples of the Hohokam culture ca. AD 800 -1300. More generally for claimed sun daggers throughout the American …

  • Yes, Aboriginal Australians Can and Did Discover the Variability of Betelgeuse

    Bradley E Schaefer•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Recently, a widely publicized claim has been made that the Aboriginal Australians discovered the variability of the red star Betelgeuse in the modern Orion, plus the variability of two other prominent red stars: Aldebaran and Antares. This result has excited the usual healthy skepticism, with questions about whether any untrained peoples can discover the variability and whether such a discovery is likely to be placed into lore and transmitted for…
