The first war of the 21 st century’s multipolar system
This article argues that during the unipolar era, capitalist expansionism created its own geopolitical rivals, which led to the emergence of the current multipolar era. It further suggests that the Ukraine conflict—framed as a proxy war between the West and Russia—constitutes the first major war of this multipolar era. While geopolitical and economic interests are ultimately intertwined, the article examines the distinct roles each played in the …
Teaching Theory and Space
Learning theories in political science can be difficult for students. This article describes a technique that helps students to understand how a theory about human characteristics may impact behavior. I use a mini-simulation in which two volunteers are asked to enact a gimmick in front of the classroom, demonstrating the theory of human territoriality (Asal et al. 2018). As the volunteers engage in small talk, I point out that they engage with on…
Taming’ Arab social movements
In the wake of the recent Arab revolutions, the European Union (EU) has sought to provide genuine and substantial support to a range of Arab social movements in the region’s emerging polities. Yet the EU’s recent democracy-promotion efforts represent a puzzle for earlier critical approaches to the relationship between Europe and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), which argue for the existence of hegemonic patronage linkages. We argue, howev…
Model, Event, Context
In this article I scrutinize a particular discursive strategy that attempts to straightjacket the new social movements in the Arab uprisings. Rather than being open to new forms of polities and alternative modes of economic and social organization, an emerging governmental and scholarly discourse calls for a model of development for the Arab world. I argue that this model limits political imagination; and that it is the effect of a late modern lo…
Why Does Turkey Seek European Union Membership? A Historical Institutional Approach
Notwithstanding the troubled past and uncertain future of its relations with the European Union (EU), Turkey persists in its bid for membership in the EU. What accounts for Turkey’s continuing pursuit of EU membership? We argue that the historical and institutional trend of modernization has locked Turkey into a pattern of domestic and foreign policies which is difficult, if not impossible, for current policymakers to break or reverse. As part of…
Realism at the Limits
Realists have been all but silent on the issue of nuclear disarmament, largely because giving up military capabilities seems counter-intuitive to realism's logic. The nonproliferation literature, on the other hand, has treated the insights of realist theory as failing to come to grips with the complex nature of a state's decision-making processes. The non-proliferation literature has produced rich empirical details of nuclear rollback; however, m…
Homo Sacer vs. Homo Soccer Mom
In the past decade there have been efforts to understand the war on terror through the writings of Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben. Some analyses reify certain concepts employed by Foucault and Agamben. Others do not accurately represent the actual occurrence of violence at ground level. Without claiming to present a sovereign gaze on the literature and the reading of sovereign violence in places such as Guántanamo, this article argues that t…
