Exposure to climate shocks, poverty and household well-being
We evaluate the impact of climate shocks on the well-being of farmer households in a Small Island Developing State in the Pacific, the Solomon Islands. We find that both subjective (self-assessed exposure to climate shocks) and objective (number of past dry spells) indicators of environmental stress significantly reduce the quality of life among households. Household well-being is more severely affected for farmers living in poor dwellings (e.g.,…
An approach for assessing whether agricultural projects help smallholders transition to better livelihood strategies
Smallholder project design should support farm households in transitioning to the best livelihood options available. • Employ a holistic and dynamic view of the rural transformation process to develop a new typology of smallholder livelihood strategies. • Development projects should embrace significantly long-term timeframes in design and implementation for successful transitions. Agricultural projects typically aim to promote the uptake of proje…
Rural economic activities of persons with disabilities in Sub-Saharan Africa
Despite the high prevalence of disabilities and evidence that persons with disabilities are marginalised in rural areas of developing countries, little is known about their economic lives. The literature is limited to studying how disability affects participation in labour markets and hours worked. This paper extends the current literature by exploring the extent to which disability is associated with participation in and income generated from di…
Smallholders’ land access in Sub-Saharan Africa
While scholars long recognized the importance of land markets as a key driver of rural non-farm development and transformation in rural areas, evidence on the extent of their operation and the nature of participants remains limited. We use household data from 6 countries to show that there is great potential for such markets to increase productivity and equalize factor ratios. While rental markets transfer land to land-poor and labor-rich produce…
Agricultural intensification
Boserup and Ruthenberg (BR) provided the framework to analyze the impact of population growth and market access on the intensification of farming systems. Prior evidence in Africa is consistent with the framework. Over the past two decades, rapid population growth has put farming systems under stress, while rapid urbanization and economic growth have provided new market opportunities. New measures of agro-ecological potential and urban gravity ar…
