How Does Regional Trade Policy Uncertainty Affect the Quality of Imported Products?—An Analysis Using Cafta
We study the impact of regional trade policy uncertainty on the product quality imported from ASEAN by Chinese enterprises. The research uses micro‐enterprise‐level data from CAFTA and employs the DID method for empirical tests. The analysis shows that China's FTA strategy has helped reduce regional trade policy uncertainty and significantly improved the quality of imported products. The quality‐improvement effect varies based on ownership types,…
Manufacturing Input Servitization, Firm Innovation, and Export
To address current challenges such as low positioning in the global value chain (GVC), diminishing demographic dividends, and rising labor costs, Chinese firms are pivoting their comparative advantage from production expansion to service provision. This study investigates the impact of input servitization on Chinese firms' innovation and exports. First, we theoretically integrate the heterogeneous firm model with the technology selection model to…
Evaluating the factors influencing the adoption of digital culture among university students in developing areas of South Punjab
This research investigates the factors influencing the adoption of digital culture (DC) in the developing regions of South Punjab, with a focus on implementation challenges and student engagement. It is distinctive in its use of a mixed-methods approach to achieve its objectives. Qualitative method was employed to identify the factors affecting the adoption of digital culture, while a quantitative approach was utilized to explore the stimuli that…
Road expansion, allocative efficiency, and pro-competitive effect of transport infrastructure
This paper exploits the rapid expansion of China’s road infrastructure in the 2000s to empirically investigate the pro-competitive effect of transport infrastructure via the allocative efficiency channel. Dispersion of firm markups is used to gauge allocative efficiency of resources. We address the endogenous provincial road length by instrumenting road using a least-cost path route, and deal with the endogenous timing of road construction by usi…
Trade direction, market access and regional wage inequality
We introduce the trade frictions between wealthy and impoverished regions into the New Economic Geography model. We argue that to reconcile bilateral trade volumes and price data within a standard gravity model, the trade frictions between regions must be systematically asymmetric, with poor regions facing higher costs to export relative to affluent regions. We construct the corresponding econometric model based on the theoretical formulation, an…

Does environmental regulation drive away inbound foreign direct investment? Evidence from a quasi-natural experiment in China
Trade Liberalization and Markup Dispersion
In this paper, we empirically investigate whether trade liberalization affects markup dispersion, a potential source of resource misallocation. The identification uses China's WTO accession at the end of 2001. We show that trade liberalization reduces markup dispersion within a narrowly defined industry. We also examine both price and cost responses to trade liberalization, as well as heterogeneous effects across firms and across locations. Our s…
