  • Navigating India's groundwater crisis

Open Access•Anjal Prakash, Noor Kumar et al.•ARTICLE•Water Policy•2024

The rate of groundwater extraction has seen an exponential rise in India over the past few decades. Several districts in the country face groundwater depletion and contamination issues, threatening agricultural and domestic usage. The overexploitation of the resource can be attributed to the sowing of water-intensive crops, distortionary subsidies, the absence of incentives, asymmetrical information, and regulatory bottlenecks. This paper present…

  • Irrigation and the spatial pattern of local economic development in India

Open Access•David Blakeslee, Aaditya Dar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 8

We study the long-term impact of large-scale irrigation infrastructure on the composition of local economic activity in India. Our analysis uses high-resolution spatial data covering approximately 150,000 villages and towns and exploits spatial discontinuities in the coverage of irrigation projects. Irrigation increases agricultural output, wealth, and population density in rural villages. However, in towns it reduces population and nightlight de…

  • The impact of groundwater depletion on agricultural production in India

Open Access•Nishan Bhattarai, Adrienne Pollack et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

India relies on groundwater irrigation to produce staple grain crops that provide over half of the calories consumed by its over 1.3 billion people. While groundwater has helped India achieve grain self-sufficiency, aquifers have been overexploited across much of the country and its implications for crop production are unclear. To understand how groundwater depletion affects staple grain (wheat, rice, maize, pearl millet, and sorghum) production …
