  • Blowing Against the Winds of Change

    Open Access•Emanuele Ertola•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•2022•Cited by: 2

The literature on decolonization in settler contexts is characterized by an almost exclusive focus on the Anglo-French world, and by a marked emphasis on violence as the predominant feature of the settlers’ reaction to change. This article aims to challenge this assumption. Eritrea – like the other former Italian colonies – is certainly a peculiar case of early, top-down decolonization; but the actors on the field were anything but passive specta…

  • White slaves’

    Emanuele Ertola•ARTICLE•Labor History•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 18

  • Navi bianche. Il rimpatrio dei civili italiani dall'Africa Orientale

    Emanuele Ertola•ARTICLE•PASSATO E PRESENTE•2014•Cited by: 1

With the fall of the Italian empire, defeated in 1941 by the British army, an agreement between the two states permitted the repatriation of citizens from Italian East Africa. A naval expedition was organized for this purpose by the Italian government. Between 1942 and 1943 four large ocean liners made three trips circumnavigating Africa and brought back to Italy about 28,000 Italians. This paper, based on reports written by the chiefs of the exp…
