  • A Sinking Empire

    Open Access•Mikki Stelder•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 29

This article pivots around the work of early modern legal scholar Hugo Grotius to consider the political stakes of ontological assessments of the sea and water in the context of Dutch imperialism. It draws on links with land reclamation projects in the Netherlands, while at the same time ties these to urgent questions within contemporary critical water and ocean studies around water, ontology, and race. Suggesting a rethinking of Grotius’s unders…

  • The colonial difference in Hugo Grotius: Rational man, slavery and Indigenous dispossession

    Open Access•Mikki Stelder•ARTICLE•Postcolonial Studies•2022•Cited by: 6

Post)colonial Dutch historiography remains saturated with the myth of the Dutch as benevolent and sometimes even reluctant imperialists geared toward trade rather than settlement. In this article, I seek to unsettle some common presumptions made on the basis of this myth through a re-reading of the work of Dutch lawyer, humanist and state ideologue Hugo Grotius. In particular, I hone in on his writings on slavery and Indigenous (dis)possession to…

  • Ingredients of empire: An oceanic approach to the study of Dutch imperialism and its aftermath

    Mikki Stelder•ARTICLE•Tijdschrift voor Genderstudies•2021•References: 4

This article turns to the figure of the ship in the controversial Dutch Sinterklaas celebration to explore what an oceanic framework might bring to the study of Dutch imperialism, colonialism, and slavery. Drawing on what Renisa Mawani calls an ‘oceanic approach and method’ for the study of colonial history, law, and colonial–racial orders, I examine the ship as an anchor point for abstracting, enacting, and rehearsing a colonial–racial order tha…

  • Queer Politics of Boycott at the World Social Forum: Free Palestine

    Mikki Stelder•ARTICLE•Radical History Review•2019•References: 6

In 2012, Palestinian anticolonial-queer activists organized a workshop and conference at the World Social Forum: Free Palestine in Porto Alegre, Brazil, titled "Queer Visions at the World Social Forum: Free Palestine." Queer Visions brought different activists together who had been organizing against Israel's state-sponsored pinkwashing campaign and for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS). Since 2010, Palestinian queer activism has publicly …

  • ‘From the closet into the Knesset’: Zionist sexual politics and the formation of settler subjectivity

    Open Access•Mikki Stelder•ARTICLE•Settler Colonial Studies•2018

This article examines Zionist sexual politics as a particular modality of settler colonial subject making. It analyses the inclusion of Israeli LGBTs into the state, by examining the cultural archive of Zionism, in which the colonisation of Palestine and Palestinians is constitutively inscribed and obscured. Tracing the itinerary of Israel’s LGBT movement, it looks at how the Zionist project becomes articulated on novel terms. Focusing on the spe…

  • Other Scenes of Speaking: Listening to Palestinian Anticolonial-Queer Critique

    Mikki Stelder•ARTICLE•Journal of Palestine Studies•2018•Cited by: 7•References: 4

Palestinian Queers for BDS first called on the international LGBTQI community to be in solidarity with Palestinians and support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign in 2010. PQBDS argued that Israel was using gay rights and gay lives to pinkwash state-sanctioned violence against Palestinians. Since then, much has been said and written about Israel's pinkwashing campaign and the violence it endorses and engenders. But much remains unsaid…

  • The Global Trajectories of Queerness: Re-thinking Same-Sex Politics in the Global South

Laia Ribera Canguez, Soledad Cutuli et al.•BOOK•The Global Trajectories of…•2015

The Global Trajectories of Queerness interrogates the term "queer" by closely mapping what space the theorizing of same-sex sexualities and sexual politics in the non-West inhabits. From theoretical discussions around the epistemologies of such conceptualizations of space in the Global South, to speci c ethnographies of same-sex culture, this collection hopes to forge a way of tracking the histories of race, class, caste, gender, and sexual orien…
