  • Non-cognitive skills and willingness to participate in drought index crop insurance in Ghana

Emmanuel Martey, John K M Kuwornu et al.•ARTICLE•Climate and Development•2026

Several studies have examined the role of safety-net programme in mitigating agricultural production risks. However, there is a lack of evidence on how non-cognitive skills (NCS) influence farmers’ participation in safety net programmes. This study investigates the relationship between farmers’ non-cognitive skills and willingness to participate in drought index crop insurance (DICI) using a farm household survey of 1,100 farmers in the Northern …

  • Climate risk adaptation through livestock insurance

Open Access•Ifedotun Victor Aina, Opeyemi Eyitayo Ayinde et al.•ARTICLE•Climate and Development•2025

This study investigates the option of choosing index-based livestock insurance (IBLI) to mitigate the adverse effects associated with climate change in Kwara State, Nigeria. Previous studies indicate that the failure to include farmers during the early stage of pilot programme design is a major factor in Africa’s poor participation rate in index insurance. We conducted a survey with 392 farming households across eight of the state's 16 Local Gove…

  • Dynamic impacts of intermittent trade conflicts

    Open Access•Ruohan Wu, Mario J Miranda•ARTICLE•World Economy•2023

This paper examines how intermittent trade conflicts affect production, investment and exports of an industry that produces for both domestic and international markets. We construct a dynamic stochastic model of a representative profit maximising firm that is exposed to intermittent trade conflicts. We then extend the firm‐level model to an industry comprising a continuum of firms with heterogeneous production costs and calibrate its parameters t…

  • Smallholder Farmer Risk Preferences in Northern Ghana

Francis H Kemeze, Mario J Miranda et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2020

We conduct a controlled field experiment to elicit risk preferences among maize farmers in Northern Ghana. Farmers participating in the experiment were asked to choose from a menu of lotteries representing different hypothetical probability distributions over yields produced by ‘traditional’ and ‘high yield’ maize varieties. We estimate a Rank-Dependent Utility Model (RDU) with an Expo-Power utility function, allowing for systematic subjective un…
