  • Using free remotely sensed data to assess war-induced damage to agricultural cultivation

Open Access•Klaus Deininger, Daniel Ayalew Ali et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2025•Cited by: 3•References: 4

  • Quantifying war-induced crop losses in Ukraine in near real time to strengthen local and global food security

    Open Access•Klaus Deininger, Daniel Ayalew Ali et al.•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 5

We use a 4-year panel (2019–2022) of 10,125 village councils in Ukraine to estimate effects of the war started by Russia on area and expected yield of winter crops aggregated up from the field level. Satellite imagery is used to provide information on direct damage to agricultural fields; classify crop cover using machine learning; and compute the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for winter cereal fields as a proxy for yield. Without…

  • Essential earth observation variables for high-level multi-scale indicators and policies

    Open Access•Anthony Lehmann, P Mazzetti et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Several holistic approaches are based on the description of socio-ecological systems to address the sustainability challenge. Essential Variables (EVs) have the potential to support these approaches by describing the status of the Earth system through monitoring and modeling. The different classes of EVs can be organized along the environmental policy framework of Drivers, Pressures, States, Impacts and Responses. The EV concept represents an opp…

  • Earth observation

    Open Access•Evangelos Gerasopoulos, Jennifer Bailey et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Over the course of the 21st century, a century in which the urbanization process of the previous one is ever on the rise, the novel smart city concept has rapidly evolved and now encompasses the broader aspect of sustainability. Concurrently, there has been a sea change in the domain of Earth observation (EO) where scientific and technological breakthroughs are accompanied by a paradigm shift in the provision of open and free data. While the urba…

  • Environmental and political implications of underestimated cropland burning in Ukraine

Open Access•Joanne Hall, Sergiy Zibtsev et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Open burning is illegal in Ukraine, yet Ukraine has, on average, 300 times more fire activity per year (2001-2019) than most European countries. In 2016 and 2017, 47% of Ukraine was identified as cultivated area, with a total of 70% of land area dedicated to agricultural use. Over 57% of all active fires in Ukraine detected using space-borne Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) during 2016 and 2017 were associated with pre-planting f…
