Whitehead et al. Response to “Misunderstandings of Multiple Systems Estimation
Response to Vincent et al.'s (2020) letter in this journal concerning our recent paper on multiple Sysytems EStimation
On the Unreliability of Multiple Systems Estimation for Estimating the Number of Potential Victims of Modern Slavery in the UK
Accurate records of victims of modern slavery identified by various agencies allow investigators to compare different jurisdictions, track fluctuations in prevalence over time and evaluate preventative interventions. As well as enumerating those victims known to agencies, it would be desirable to know how many are working undetected under conditions of modern slavery and thus deduce the total number involved. To estimate the number of undetected …

The Life of the Rev. John Wesley
The Life of the Rev. John Wesley
Published in 1793–6, amid controversy following the death of John Wesley (1703–91), this two-volume work vied with others for status as the most authentic biography of the Methodist leader. Wesley had left his papers to his physician John Whitehead (c.1740–1804) and the ministers Thomas Coke and Henry Moore, but Whitehead monopolised the papers in the preparation of his biography, refusing to allow his fellow executors access - the dispute is men…

Western Progressives, Old South Planters, or Colonial Oppressors
Territorial Hawaii was controlled economically, and to an extent, politically, by a group of sugar factors known as the Big Five. Mainland journalists and government officials criticized the influence of the oligarchy and made regional comparisons. This article argues that such criticism reflected West Coast prejudices against Hawaii's Asian labor force as much as specific actions of the Big Five

An Inventory Dated 1689 of the Chinese Porcelain in the Collection of the Grand Dauphin, Son of Louis Xiv, at Versailles
A manuscript inventory of the collections of the Grand Dauphin (Monseigneur), son of King Louis XIV of France, was taken in 1689. The part of this inventory reproduced and discussed here lists some 381 pieces of Chinese porcelain, mostly blue and white, though also including the Gaignières-Beckford vase. Some sixty-four of these had been presented to the Dauphin by the two Siamese ‘embassies’ of 1684 and 1686. Sizes and valuations are given for m…

Risk factors for breast cancer by mode of diagnosis
We have investigated factors affecting the probability that a woman with breast cancer participating in a mammographic screening programme will be diagnosed by the screen. Data from a large American case-control study, with subjects drawn from women participating in an annual screening programme, were used. During the screening programme, 409 cases were identified, the mode of diagnosis being screen detection for 331 and interval detection for 78…
