The growing impact of ICT productivity via the cost of capital: Evidence from the U.S. and Japan
Analyzing multi-greenhouse gas mitigation of China using a general equilibrium model
Climate actions have focused on CO2 mitigation and only some studies of China consider non-CO2 greenhouse gases (GHGs), which account for nearly 18% of gross GHG emissions. The economy-wide impact of mitigation covering CO2 and non-CO2 GHGs in China, has not been comprehensively studied and we develop a multi-sector dynamic model to compare the impact of CO2-only mitigation with a multi-GHG mitigation policy that also price non-CO2 GHGs. We find …
Policy strategies to tackle rebound effects: A comparative analysis
Promoting energy efficiency is generally assumed to be an effective strategy to reduce energy use and tackle climate change. However, an extensive literature has shown that rebound effects reduce its effectiveness and can even be counterproductive. We show how a more complex policy strategy, with coordinated measures, could provide the desired results by offsetting energy and carbon rebound effects. Along with the energy-efficiency improvement, w…
Japan's Dietary Transition and Its Impacts
An examination of the transformation of the Japanese diet from subsistence to abundance and an assessment of the consequences for health, longevity, and the environment. In a little more than a century, the Japanese diet has undergone a dramatic transformation. In 1900, a plant-based, near-subsistence diet was prevalent, with virtually no consumption of animal protein. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, Japan's consumption of meat, fis…
A Retrospective Look at the U.S. Productivity Growth Resurgence
It is widely recognized that information technology was critical to the dramatic acceleration of U.S. labor productivity growth in the mid 1990s. This paper traces the evolution of productivity estimates to document how and when this perception emerged. Early studies concluded that information technology was relatively unimportant. Only after the massive information technology investment boom of the late 1990s did this investment and underlying p…

International labor migration and social security: Analysis of the transition path
A Continuous-Time Arbitrage-Pricing Model With Stochastic Volatility and Jumps
We formulate and test a continuous-time asset-pricing model using U.S. equity market data. We assume that stock returns are driven by common factors including random jump-size Poisson processes and Brownian motions with stochastic volatility. The model places overidentifying restrictions on the mean returns, allowing one to identify risk-neutral probability distributions useful in pricing derivative securities. We test for the restrictions and de…
