  • Archaeological LiDAR in Mediterranean Karst Landscapes. A Multiproxy Dating Method for Archaeological Landscape and a Case Study From Prehistoric Kras Plateau (Slovenia)

    Open Access•Edisa Lozić, Benjamin Štular•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2025

The case study area is a small but typical prehistoric landscape in the Kras Plateau on the north coast of the central Mediterranean. The Late Bronze and Iron Age Kras Plateau was an emblematic Mediterranean archaeological landscape dotted with numerous hillforts. Since the mid‐20th century, the landscape had been overgrown with some of the most archaeology‐hostile vegetation, severely impeding landscape archaeology until archaeological LiDAR rev…

  • Rethinking Ethnic Identity in the Archaeology of the Ancient Slavs

    Open Access•Benjamin Štular•ARTICLE•Arheološki vestnik•2025

The archaeology of the ancient Slavs has advanced methodologically but remains divided between scholars who deny the Slavs’ migrations, and those linking material culture directly to ethnic identities. This paper seeks to bridge this divide by reassessing the theoretical framework for studying the ancient Slavs. It critiques the historical development of research on ethnic identity in archaeology, highlighting limitations in both primordialist an…

  • Executable Map Paper (EMaP) for Archaeological LiDAR

Open Access•Benjamin Štular, Edisa Lozić•ARTICLE•Journal of Computer Applications…•2023

Archaeological LiDAR has evolved into an indispensable component of archaeological prospection and landscape archaeology. However, it is frequently employed as a black-box digital method, which confines it to the realm of a specialized field. Making scientific publications more accessible, transparent, and reproducible is one of the steps required to turn LiDAR into a background method for all archaeologists. This is possible, according to our pr…

  • Interpolation of airborne LiDAR data for archaeology

Open Access•Benjamin Štular, Edisa Lozić et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023•References: 10

The use of topographic airborne LiDAR data has become an essential part of archaeological prospection, and the need for an archaeology-specific data processing workflow is well established. However, interpolation, an important step in which the digital elevation model is derived from the classified point cloud, has received little attention from archaeologists. This processing step has a direct impact on the accuracy and visual performance of the…

  • Migration of Alpine Slavs and machine learning

Open Access•Benjamin Štular, Edisa Lozić et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2022

The rapid expansion of the Slavic speakers in the second half of the first millennium CE remains a controversial topic in archaeology, and academic passions on the issue have long run high. Currently, there are three main hypotheses for this expansion. The aim of this paper was to test the so-called “hybrid hypothesis,” which states that the movement of people, cultural diffusion and language diffusion all occurred simultaneously. For this purpos…

  • Grave Orientation In The Middle Ages

    Open Access•Benjamin Štular•BOOK•Grave Orientation In The Middle…•2022

The aim of the book is to demonstrate the importance of grave orientation for the archaeology of Medieval death and burial. In doing this, two key points are emphasized. First, grave orientation was an important, and in some cases the most important, conduit for the symbolic meaning of burials in the Middle Ages. Second, for an archaeologist to reconstruct this meaning, the analysis must be conducted with methodological rigour, and inferences mus…

  • Digital Archiving in Archaeology

    Open Access•Julian Richards, Ulf Jakobsson et al.•ARTICLE•Internet Archaeology•2021•Cited by: 11•References: 1

The articles in this special issue demonstrate significant differences in digital archiving capacity in different countries. In part these reflect differences in the history of archaeology in each country, its relationship to the state, whether it is centralised or decentralised, state-led or commercially driven. They also reflect some of the different attitudes to archaeology across the world, most recently explored in a survey conducted under t…

  • Archiving of Archaeological Digital Datasets in Slovenia

    Open Access•Benjamin Štular•ARTICLE•Internet Archaeology•2021

This article presents the archiving of archaeological digital datasets in Slovenia in its historic context. The datasets discussed have been separated into three categories: non-reproducible datasets, reproducible datasets, and registries. Several reproducible datasets created by ZRC SAZU have been freely available online since the early 2000s, but the number of users is small and those benefiting often do not adhere to clearly stated copyright l…

  • Srednjeveški Blejski otok v arheoloških virih / Medieval archaeology of Bled Island

  • Slovene Pagan Sacred Landscape Study Case

    Open Access•Benjamin Štular, Ivan M Hrovatin•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2015•References: 1

In this article the authors present the Slovene Pagan sacred landscape. This was concluded through the oral tradition and archaeological sources. They have tried to determine the role of the individual ritual site within the landscape and the man…

  • Land-use changes in the Alps (Slovenia) in the fifteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries AD

    Open Access•Maja Andrič, Andrej Martinčić et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 6

This paper compares a high resolution, near-annual pollen record from the Šijec raised bog (1194 m a.s.l., Pokljuka, Slovenia) with historical land-use maps in order to understand how the Alpine environment has altered because of changeable economic trends in the fifteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries AD. In the fifteenth century AD the study site was surrounded by mixed forest ( Fagus, Abies, Picea, Quercus) and agricultural fields and pa…

  • Mali grad

    Open Access•Benjamin Štular•BOOK•Mali grad•2009

The in depth archaeological research of High Medieval castle presented in this book is unique in Slovenia and among just few in this part of Central Europe. The book is based on analysis of the archaeological data gathered in more than a decade of archaeological excavations in 1980s and 1990s. In the introductory chapter written sources and interpretative models are presented. The analysis of pictorial representations follows. The focus of the re…

    Open Access•Benjamin Štular•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2007

This article examines archaeological data on an Early Medieval cemetery. Presenting new interpretations of partially known data, its author examines life stories of individuals buried at this site as well as the communitys ritual place. Although interpretations, in which the author strongly emphasizes experiental subjectivity, are the result of certain previously tested methodologies they nevertheless represent a novelty in the research of Early …

  • Simbolika tvarne kulture – lonček z Brezij The Symbolism of Material Culture

    Open Access•Benjamin Štular•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2005

The author discusses in this contribution the symbolism of an Early Medieval pot from the Brezje above Zreče necropolis. The pot is exeptional due to the Greek cross impressed on the base. The impression correlates exactly with the cross-shaped brooch from Saint Lambert near Pristava. In one object, this small pot, the Slavic ritual – a small pot as an object of grave inventory - and the Vlach custom - a Christian symbol - are combined. Consequen…
