Multiple metallurgies in Medieval Tamdult, a mining, smelting and caravan town in southern Morocco
The early Islamic settlement of Tamdult in southern Morocco is at the centre of an archaeological mining-metallurgical landscape with strong evidence for the production and working of lead, silver, copper and brass. Here, we provide an overview of the various metallurgies identified, and discuss their likely common origin from a sulfidic complex lead-zinc-copper ore mineralisation, leading to two distinct primary products: silver pellets and bras…
An after-action review of Covid-19 cases and mitigation measures at US Mission India, March 2020-July 2021
Between March 2020-June 2021, over 30 million COVID-19 cases were reported in India. We described the COVID-19 response across the US Mission India (US Embassy New Delhi, US Consulates – Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata) to use the learnings for a possible future pandemic. We reviewed COVID-19 mitigation activities at five US Mission India posts from March 2020–July 2021. We also analyzed case investigation and contact tracing data from He…
Small-Scale Copper Production in Late Roman Pyrga, Cyprus
Copper was central to the Late Roman Cypriot economy, represented by large-scale production sites. This study examines often-overlooked small-scale mining by focusing on Pyrga in the Pouzis Valley, Southeast Cyprus. Surveys by the Hala Sultan Tekke Hinterland Survey Project (2021–ongoing) revealed dispersed slag heaps near potential church remains. Metal slag analysis reveals a consistent manganese-rich composition and low residual copper, sugges…
Archaeometallurgical production remains in India
Surface matters
Wootz, the Indian crucible steel, is a hypereutectoid iron–carbon alloy and famous for its outstanding qualities. Due to the paucity of archaeological and historical ingot finds and conservative sampling strategies, discussions of the homogeneity of such ingots and the microstructural representativeness of samples have remained generic and assumptive. Thus two major shortcomings in the study of crucible steel ingots include the determination of t…
Estimating carbon content in crucible steel using image analysis
Pre-industrial crucible steel ingots, produced in both Central and South Asia, are an important class of iron-carbon alloys. Their microstructure reflects their formation from a liquid alloy at a carbon content of 1.0–2.5wt%, which is higher than most mild steels but lower than most cast irons. This article introduces a tool to quantify the carbon content of such alloys based on an operator-supervised image analysis which determines the relative …
Are crucible steel ingots isotopically homogenous? AMS radiocarbon measurements on ingots from Telangana, India
A journey of over 200 years
Recent new evidence emerged from the crucible steel production site of Konasamudram, Telangana, India. A hoard of 60 crucible steel ingots from this site offers a unique opportunity to study details of the early large-scale production of this fabled material, beginning with a detailed documentation of the weights and sizes of 45 of them. Historically, Konasamudram has been an important pre-modern crucible steel manufacturing and trading centre in…
Coverage outcomes (effects), costs, cost-effectiveness, and equity of two combinations of long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) distribution channels in Kenya
The assignment of the intervention was not at the discretion of the investigators; therefore, this study did not require registration
Pregnancy-related mortality in Africa and Asia
BACKGROUND: Women continue to die in unacceptably large numbers around the world as a result of pregnancy, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. Part of the problem is a lack of accurate, population-based information characterising the issues and informing solutions. Population surveillance sites, such as those operated within the INDEPTH Network, have the potential to contribute to bridging the information gaps. OBJECTIVE: To describe pat…
Availability and utilization of malaria prevention strategies in pregnancy in eastern India
A disconnect remains between routine antenatal practices in India and known strategies to prevent and treat malaria in pregnancy. Prevention strategies, in particular the use of insecticide-treated bednets, are underutilized. Gaps highlighted by this study combined with recent estimates of the prevalence of malaria during pregnancy in these areas should be used to revise governmental policy and target increased educational efforts among health ca…
