Integrated geophysical surveys for the subsurface mapping of buried structures under and surrounding of the Agios Voukolos Church in İzmir, Turkey
Optimum Electrical Resistivity Tomography (Oert) approach using combination of different arrays in archaeological investigations
In this study, the optimum electrical resistivity tomography (OERT) concept was analyzed by combining different electrode arrays in terms of sensitivity in archaeological cases. More than a hundred electrode arrays were classified by Szalai & Szarka (2008), investigating the superposition, focusing and linearity problem. Also, Dahlin & Zhou (2004) compared images resulting from various configurations. However, the difficulties posed by apparent r…
Integrated usage of geophysical prospection techniques in Höyük (tepe, tell)-type archaeological settlements
The integrated use of geophysical methods has developed rapidly in the last fifteen years in archaeological prospection (Brizzolari et al., 1992; Gaffney et al., 2004; Drahor, 2006; Casana et al., 2008). The combined application of different geophysical techniques supplies useful information about buried archaeological contexts, particularly höyük(tell, tepe)-type archaeological settlements. The aim of such studies is to help archaeologists condu…
Magnetic and electrical resistivity tomography investigations in a Roman legionary camp site (Legio IV Scythica) in Zeugma, Southeastern Anatolia, Turkey
Magnetic and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys were carried out in the area of a Roman military installation located near the Zeugma archaeological site in southeastern Turkey. Magnetic gradiometer surveys were performed in the northern part of this area and covered 8.52 ha; measurements were obtained using a FM‐36 fluxgate gradiometer on a 0.5 × 1 m grid. The visualized data revealed the general orientation of the Roman military se…
Magnetic imaging and electrical resistivity tomography studies in a Roman military installation found in Satala archaeological site, northeastern Anatolia, Turkey
Application of the self‐potential method to archaeological prospection
The self‐potential (SP) method is very rarely used in archaeological prospection because related phenomena are not very well known. The aim of this study is to discuss the different SP phenomena that might be observed at archaeological sites, and therefore the SP method was applied at different archaeological sites in Anatolia (Turkey), such as Acemhöyük, Amorium, Burgaz and Ulucakhöyük archaeological areas and the Sinop amphorae workshop site. T…
A Large-Scale Geophysical Prospection in Acemhöyük, the site of the Assyrian Trade Colony Period
1960'li yillardan beri suren kazilar Acemhoyug’un Asur Ticaret Kolonileri Caginda (M,O, 1900 -1800) cok oneml…
An application of the self-potential (SP) method in archaeogeophysical prospection
Usage of the self-potential (SP) method on archaeological sites has been very limited and the phenomena that form the SP anomalies are not very well known. We believe that the vertical capillary water flows around stone walls that can be encountered frequently in archaeological sites, the porosity of the soil surrounding the archaeological structures, the moisture and clay ratio of the soil, and the changes in pH value of the soil, may form the S…
