  • The Detection and Mapping of Saxon Sunken‐featured Buildings at Caistor St Edmund, Norfolk

    Open Access•David Bescoby, David J Bescoby et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Strong archaeological evidence exists for the presence of Anglo‐Saxon settlement at the former Roman civitas capital Venta Icenorum , including two cemeteries of early Saxon date. A large‐scale magnetic survey west of the former walled town has revealed a complex palimpsest of surviving subsurface features, several of which were cautiously interpreted as the remains of Anglo‐Saxon sunken‐featured buildings (SFBs). Targeted earth resistance measur…

  • Magnetic survey at Venta Icenorum , Caistor St Edmund: Survey strategies and initial results

    Open Access•David Bescoby, William Bowden et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 6

This short report summarizes two seasons of magnetic surveying at the Roman town of Venta Icenorum at Caistor St Edmund, Norfolk. Survey strategies have been developed utilizing caesium vapour magnetometers mounted on a wheeled platform with a global positioning system to map former areas of settlement and their immediate hinterlands. The resulting survey system has enabled the rapid collection of high‐resolution magnetic data over an area of 30 …

  • A Preliminary Investigation of Two Prehistoric Cave Sites in Southern Albania

    Open Access•Karen Francis, K D Francis et al.•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•2009•References: 9

In this article we describe the evaluation of two prehistoric sites situated within the coastal zone of south-western Albania, originally investigated by the Italian prehistorian Luigi Cardini in 1939. The first is a cave site in the town of Himara; the second a rock-shelter at Kanalit in the Acroceraunian Mountains to the north. Investigations at both locations revealed stratified evidence of prehistoric activity dating from the mid-Holocene. At…

  • Enhanced interpretation of magnetic survey data using artificial neural networks: A case study from Butrint, southern Albania

    Open Access•David Bescoby, David J Bescoby et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The classical city of Butrint in southern Albania embodies over three millennia of settlement history. A Roman colony was established sometime after 31 BC , which led to the expansion of the city southwards onto a low‐lying floodplain where settlement continued well into the late antique period. In this paper we describe the results of a detailed magnetometry survey undertaken to investigate Roman settlement upon the floodplain. The study include…

  • Roman and late-antique Butrint: Excavations and survey 2000-2001

    Open Access•William Bowden, R Hodges et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Roman Archaeology•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 6

The Roman and Byzantine port of Butrint, situated on the SW coast of Albania directly opposite the island of Corfu, has been the focus of a major research project since 1994. The investigation of the site and its hinterland commenced with excavations within the walled town and a survey of sites and monuments in the region (Hodges et al 1997). Despite a brief hiatus caused by civil unrest in Albania in 1997, work continued with excavation and stud…
