  • Limestone Provenance in Roman Lime‐Volcanic Ash Mortars from the Villa dei Quintili, Rome

Open Access•Giusj Valentina Fichera, Cristina Maria Belfiore et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 4

Roman mortars were collected from the Villa dei Quintili in Rome, an archaeological site consisting of numerous edifices from nine construction phases dating from the 2nd century A.D. to modern times. A multianalytical approach was used on 34 mortar samples to infer the evolution of production techniques over time and to identify the source area of calcareous raw materials used in the preparation of the lime. Optical microscopy, scanning electron…

  • A Multidisciplinary Approach for the Archaeometric Study of Pozzolanic Aggregate in R oman Mortars

Open Access•Cristina Maria Belfiore, Giusj Valentina Fichera et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 24

This contribution focuses on the study of historical mortars from a Roman archaeological site known as V illa dei Q uintili , a monumental villa located in the south‐eastern part of R ome ( I taly). The study was carried out on 38 mortar samples, collected from several edifices within the complex. A multi‐analytical approach, including polarized optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy‐dispersive system and laser ablat…
