The Black Lines in Piet Mondrian’s Paintings (1921–1938)
This research provides new insights into the materials, methods of application and modification of the black lines used by Piet Mondrian (1872–1944) in his Neoplastic works. Interesting information was gained from letters and studio photographs, the making of mock-ups and reconstructions, and the in-depth study of four paintings, dated between 1921 and 1938, in the collection of Fondation Beyeler (Riehen/Basel, Switzerland)—Tableau I (1921–1925),…
Investigation of Two Folding Screens by Futurist Artist Giacomo Balla
Two folding screens by futurist artist Giacomo Balla (1871–1958) in the collection of the Kröller-Müller Museum (the Netherlands) were investigated: Paravento con linea di velocità (1916–1917) and Paravento (1916/1917–1958). The screens are painted on both sides, the first on four canvases, stretched onto two wooden strainers and framed with painted wooden strips, and the second on wooden panels set into four painted stiles. In the past, damages …
Shades of violet
Bright violet-coloured aniline dyes were developed and produced from the late 19th century onwards. Primarily used for dyeing of textiles, they were also employed in inks for letters and drawings. The industrial production of these dyes comprised numerous companies in Germany, France and England and concurrent chemical synthesis methods rapidly evolved. ‘Methyl violet’, also known as ‘Violet de Paris’, is an example of an aniline dye that made a …
Identification of Pre-1950 Synthetic Organic Pigments in Artists’ Paints. A Non-Invasive Approach Using Handheld Raman Spectroscopy
There is little information on the actual use of early synthetic organic pigments (SOPs) in art objects, especially those from before 1950. Their presence can, however, pose a challenge to conservation because their chemical composition, as well as their lightfastness and sensitivity to solvents, are often unknown. Here, a study on the non-invasive identification of SOPs in historic pre-1950 varnished paint-outs from artists’ materials manufactur…
Disclosing the composition of historical commercial felt-tip pens used in art by integrated vibrational spectroscopy and pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry
Archaeometric investigation of Roman tesserae from Herculaneum (Italy) by the combined use of complementary micro-destructive analytical techniques
