  • Settlement dynamics in the Lower Mureș Region during the 2nd millennium BCE

    Open Access•Victor Sava, Florin Gogâltan•ARTICLE•Communicationes Archaeologicae…•2025

The Lower Mureș Region (LMR) is a distinct geographical area in the southeastern part of the Carpathian Basin. It stretches from where the Mureș River exits the mountain corridor to its confluence with the Tisza River. Systematic field surveys conducted over the last 15 years in an area of ca. 2,200 km2 have led to the identification of 100 settlements that date back to the 2nd millennium BC. This makes the LMR one of the most thoroughly investig…

  • Central-Eastern Europe as a centre of Middle Ages extractive metallurgy

Open Access•Jack Longman, Daniel Veres et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2024•References: 3

Bohemia to Greece is home to some of the richest ore deposits on earth, with archaeological evidence suggesting a long history of metal use. However, the exact timing and extent of past metal processing activities remains unclear. The Middle Ages and Early Modern period (c. 500-1800 common era (CE)) in Europe, saw the expansion of metal use at an unprecedented scale, continent-wide. Here we analysed rates of past atmospheric lead (Pb) deposition …

  • Contumatz Pricske. A study of Historical Archaeology

Open Access•Andrea DEMJÉN, Florin Gogâltan•ARTICLE•STUDIA ANTIQUA ET ARCHAEOLOGICA•2022

This article presents some theoretical aspects related to historical archaeology and mountain landscape archaeology research domains. There were noted various research projects from Transylvania that involved archaeological discoveries found at altitudes above 800 m. Regarding historical archaeology in Romania, the concept and methodology of approaching the recent past, is a field of research that includes only a few recent projects. That is why …

  • Vegetal Ritual Offerings From a Late Bronze Age Pit From Vlaha-Pad Site, Cluj County, Romania

Open Access•Ciuta Elena Beatrice, Florin Gogâltan•ARTICLE•Journal of Ancient History and…•2022•References: 6

An amazing and extremely rare archaeological context discovered at the Vlaha-Pad site located in the Transylvania area (Cluj County, Romania) may be related to offerings in the Late Bronze Age. Radiocarbon calibrated data indicates that the context ranges from 1612 to 1433 cal BC. The context is particularly important regarding the unearthing of a wood barrel full of sprouted barley that can be associated with a ritual offering to Gods. In additi…

  • The Bronze Age Multilayered Settlements in the Carpathian Basin (Cca. 2500-1600/1500 Bc). An Old Catalogue and Some Chronological Problems

    Open Access•Florin Gogâltan•ARTICLE•Journal of Ancient History and…•2018

Fifteen years ago, during my Alexander von Humbold scholarship in Berlin, when I started focusing on the tell phenomena, I made a catalogue of the multilayered Bronze Age settlements in the Carpathian Basin. Based on information found in the secondary literature published until the year 2002, I selected a number of 188 such settlements (Map 1). The list and the chronological table presented the most important information on Bronze Age tells, tell…

  • The Bronze Age Fortifications in Munar “Wolfsberg”, Arad County. The 2014 and 2017 Archaeological Researches

    Victor Sava, Florin Gogâltan•ARTICLE•Analecta Archaeologica…•2017

In spite that the Bronze Age site Munar “Wolfsberg” has been depicted on the Josephine topographic survey (late 18th century), the first scientific data focusing on this site occurs at the beginning of the 20th century. As “Wolfsberg” did not have the dimensions of the nearby prehistoric fortifications at Sântana and Corneşti, the site was not targeted by archaeological investigations and it has only been occasionally mentioned in the secondary l…
