  • Integrated Monitoring of Soil Radon Gas and Seismic Activity to Detect Volcanic Unrest at Mount Etna (Italy), 2023–2025

Open Access•Salvatore Giammanco, Vincenza Maiolino et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2026

This work presents the results of an integrated monitoring of soil radon gas and seismic activity at Mt. Etna from August 2023 to May 2025, aimed at enhancing comprehension of magma migration and eruption dynamics. Radon data were collected using a permanent station with an alpha particle probe, aggregated hourly. The INGV-OE network monitored seismic activity at 100 Hz; volcanic tremor was analyzed using Root-Mean-Square (RMS) values from the Se…

  • Lava flows of Mt Etna, Italy

Open Access•Emanuela De Beni, Massimo Cantarero et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2021

UAVs have become a useful tool for natural hazard monitoring. In volcanic areas, they allow wider observations of the eruptive behaviour, with no risk for the operator. The SfM technique enables obtaining orthoimages of lava flows and a DEM in a short time. These data are also useful to estimate lava flow volumes and the mass output rate characterizing an eruption. We present the results of ten UAV surveys made during and after the 30 May – 6 Jun…

  • Topographic Maps of Mount Etna’s Summit Craters, updated to December 2015

Open Access•Marco Neri, Marina De Maio et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2017

New maps of the summit of Mount Etna volcano (1:5000–1:4000), derived from helicopter photogrammetry, thermal images and terrestrial laser scanner survey, are here presented. These maps indicate the main morpho-structural changes occurring during the powerful explosive and effusive eruptions involving the summit craters of Etna over the first two weeks of December 2015. The survey enabled identifying the proximal erupted volume (7.2 ± 0.14 × 106 …
